Pankaj Berry says he has been reborn as an actor through 'Tenali Rama'

MUMBAI: Legendary actor Pankaj Berry has been a part of the showbiz for 32 years, but some of the characters he has played in his career remain close to his heart. One such character is Tathacharya from the TV show ‘Tenali Rama’, which is going off-air on November 13.

Talking about the show and his character in it, Pankaj says, “I will never be able to forget my association with ‘Tenali Rama’. I have done several TV shows and films in my acting career, but only some characters remain with you. These are the characters, which are remembered by the actor as well as the audience. In my case, these are from ‘Gul Gulshan Gulfaam’, ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, ‘Junoon’, ‘Swabhimaan’, ‘Kittie Party’ and ‘Shatranj’. Out of all these, my character of Tathacharya from ‘Tenali Rama’ will be closest to my heart. Yeh ek yaadgaar show hai. What’s interesting and unique about this character was that it had all nine emotions including anger, positive, negative, rota tha aur rulaata tha. I will never be able to forget this character. I am thankful to the production house and creative team for choosing me for the part.”

Though he is known for his acting chops, Pankaj admits that ‘Tenali Rama’ established him among the younger generation. “Iss show se meri pehchaan bohot alag aur khoobsurat bani hai. As an actor, I have been reborn. Ye jo new audience ke beech mein meri pehchaan bani hai, woh barson tak yaad rakhenge. As an actor, that is a big achievement for me. Iss tarah ke characters bohot kam likhe jaate hain. I consider this character God's blessing to me and I worked hard to establish it.”

The cast of the TV show shot the last episode on October 18 and understandably, the actor was sad on the last day. “The last story was extremely moving and so, we had to deliver emotionally heavy scenes. Uss dinn Tenali Rama (Krishna Bharadwaj), king (Tarun Khanna) and I didn't use glycerine. We cried for real. Set par emotional mahaul tha. Co-actors were sad and they were crying. I held my tears back and pacified them. However, once I entered my make-up room and was all alone, I couldn’t control myself and broke down. After all, it was a three-and-a-half-year long association. We were parting ways. I hope we reunite again and work together on another project,” he concludes

Well, it would be really heartbreaking for the fans of Tenali Rama since the show is wrapping up so soon.
