Talented TV star Prerna Wanvari recently made her stage debut in a play titled Wake Up Call along with fellow small screen compatriots like Anjum Farooki, Rubina Dilaik and Kashmira Irani among others. “This one-act presentation, directed by National award winner Sachin Gupta, was a take on life after independence. Have we have really become free? We can still get killed on the street by a bomb blast. The play carries an underlying social question wondering what we are doing to change this unfortunate situation. All of us are sitting cozily in our comfort zones not caring about what is happening to our great country,” shared Prerna. She continued, “And when something like this happens to us, we go into depression or commit suicide. However, the play wants us to gather courage to fight back and stand for one self! There were 10/12 characters and I played a street vendor selling flowers and books on Linking Road. One day there was a blast when some of my customers get killed or injured. What happens to their life then is what our one off presentation was all about. My character was the most funny; she is a livewire and not afraid of anyone.” Since this was Prerna’s first live presentation, she was quite excited. “As there were friends from the television industry, it felt like home. One of the main reasons for me trying theatre was that I wanted to challenge myself and try a one-take performance. On television, we have the liberty of goofing up, but not here. The biggest difference between TV and stage is the high you get when you get an instant feedback from the audience. Their laughing away at my character’s jokes was very much gratifying,” averred the TV star. Looking ahead, Prerna would love to do more plays. “I am open to both serious and comic roles.” And finally, when we asked Prerna, who is currently doing Parichay on Colors, about her feeling about the scourge of terrorism… she shared, “People might have been wronged but that does not justify taking anybody else’s life. No matter how many bombs you blast, how many people you shoot, you will never get a solution. They also need to remember that they are not the only people to have suffered injustices, we all have been there at some stage in our lives.” Wise words… Prerna. We just wish everyone thought like you. The world would have been a better place to live.
