You have always seen actor Rakesh Bedi joke around and tickle the funny bone. But this time this veteran man of Indian comedy (Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Shrimaan Shrimati and Yes Boss) is also educating the kids apart from making them laugh. Yes, he is a part of ZeeQ’s new show Science with Brain Café.
“It is an infotainment show. My character runs a brain cafe for kids where he sells shakes and other soft drinks to kids. I have a 28 year old science geek nephew who I always make fun of. Hence we start debates on normal day to day electronic gizmos or machines (microwaves mixes etc). But in the end he is smarter than me and I admit defeat,” says Bedi.
He continues, “In this process of fun repartee, we teach the kids not only how these appliances work but also go down its history and even conduct fun experiments to show how various colors change their shades. At times we even go beyond ordinary machines and even tinker with things as big as helicopters. In one episode we peek inside a chopper and find out how and why it can hover stationary in the air. Through the show kids will pick up info regarding concepts of Bernoulli’s Principle, Convectional Currents, Air has weight, chemicals, robotics, gases and bubbles, motors and gears, electricity and static and many more.”
Rakesh supports this mix of fun with science for, “otherwise it gets very boring. Plain lessons can also be obtained from the internet or books, but this fun element makes the learning process more interesting.”
So how good in science were you back in school?” Although I took science as specialization in class 11 and 12, my heart was always in performing arts. So I would bunk lectures and practical for acting rehearsals. I never aced my exams. Doing this show has made me reconnect with science. There is so much that I did not know.”
What is the reach of ZeeQ? “You can’t compare it to a GEC. It has a target audience of children between the age group of 8-14. The channel is also watched in schools. ”
Besides Science with Brain Café we might see Rakesh doing more comedy shows once the rains starts. Ask him what went wrong with his last SAB TV show Chintu Chinki Aur Ek Badi Si Love Story and he says, “Shelf life of shows is a million dollar question with changing tastes of audiences, TRPs and the interference of channels. Earlier shows would last for 2/3 years. Now if a show does not click from day one it is taken off very soon,” he ends.
