Srman Jain on directing his new song Mazak Karte Ho: “It’s got an X factor at the end”

MUMBAI: Actor-director Srman Jain is back after the success of his music video Tum Kya Ho. He has recently directed the song “Mazak Karte Ho” and is confident that audiences will love it. He has already received a lot of appreciation for it.

“Tum Kya Ho was a great success. Everyone appreciated it—my friends in the industry, like Harsh Limbachiya, Ravi-Sargun, and many others. They were all very surprised and happy to see me direct a music video featuring Arijit Singh and Ankit Tiwari. John Abraham and Sanjeeda, who have known me since my early TV days in 2009, were particularly supportive and excited about me directing. We’ve met a couple of times, and she has known me well since I started doing daily soaps. She was very supportive and praised me a lot. Her family was also very touched by the video, which made the entire experience even more special for me,” he says.

Talking about the song Mazak Karte Ho, he says, “It has a very international and stylized way of storytelling. The idea was to create a three-and-a-half-minute song with conventional storytelling, but with an X factor at the end. It’s a story-driven music video where people should feel connected from the start to the end. The visuals are cinematic, with a slightly abstract and crazy ending, making it different from the happy, feel-good songs I’ve directed before.”

He collaborated with Ankit Tiwari on this project. “Working with Ankit Tiwari was amazing. I’ve known him since 2016 when I produced his music videos in Kyrgyzstan. Back then, I had just started my music video production house. Ankit is like family to me, and this collaboration felt like working with a dear friend,” he says.

The video features Anuraaj Chahal, who appeared in Udaariyaan, along with Akaisha. “They both did a fantastic job, and we bonded very well during the shoot,” he adds.

He continues, “Mazak Karte Ho is very different. It has a cinematic and abstract style with an unpredictable ending. It’s not just a music video but also a short film with a strong narrative. Compared to my earlier works, like the happy and feel-good songs I did with Ankit Gupta and Isha Malviya, this one has a unique tone and approach. This was new for me, and I really had fun doing it.”

Shooting the song was quite an experience, too, he shares. “There were no major challenges, but it was hectic as we had to finish the shoot in a day. For John Abraham’s video, we faced a challenge finding the right locations around Mumbai. I had promised John that the video wouldn’t look like it was shot in India, so we had to travel all the way to Alibaug to find suitable villas and bungalows. While it was a task, shooting there turned out to be a lot of fun.”

Meanwhile, he is sure the audience will love Mazak Karte Ho. “The audience will connect with the storytelling and the cinematic feel of the video. It’s a narrative-driven song where every element, from the visuals to the emotional journey, has been designed to keep them engaged till the very end,” he says.
