Television is the Best Medium for Long-Form Storytelling : Abhigyan Jha

MUMBAI: Producer-Director Abhigyan Jha, shares his thoughts on how television has evolved and shaped society. Known for his work on Movers & Shakers, The Late Night Show, Kaali – Ek Agnipariksha, Jay Hind!,Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan and Janani - AI Ki Kahani, Jha has been a key player in redefining television entertainment.

Abhigyan believes that television has always been a powerful tool in shaping societal values. "Television has not only entertained but also educated and connected people. Over the years, it has brought global issues into our living rooms and sparked meaningful conversations," he says. According to him, television has influenced public opinion by offering a platform for diverse voices and ideas, challenging stereotypes and encouraging positive changes.

For Abhigyan, television is the best medium for long-form storytelling. "Films are too short to explore a long narrative arc. Television allows for a deeper exploration of characters and plots, making it the perfect platform for storytelling," he says. His definition of television is clear: anything episodic, 30-60 minutes long, with a minimum of 10 episodes and a fixed schedule of telecast or upload.

Looking ahead, Jha believes that television and OTT platforms will soon merge content. "In countries like the US and Korea, there’s no difference between OTT and television content. Soon, we will see the same in India. OTT is just another way to watch television," he predicts.

Abhigyan reflects on two shows that left a lasting impact on him. "In the drama, 24 was a game-changer internationally, and in India, Dekh Bhai Dekh had a profound influence. But I believe Movers & Shakers left the biggest impact on both me and the world. It revolutionized Indian television and set a new standard."

On the work front, Abhigyan Jha ventured into a bold new improv stage show, FSEX (The Free Speech Experiment), in collaboration with actor Sumit Kaul.
