Today is the biggest festival that is celebrated by the people of Kerala all over the world. They celebrate this festival with joviality and fervor. The festival is celebrated for ten days starting from the first day (Atham) and continuing till tenth and the biggest day called Thiru Onam. Festivities begin early morning when people clean up their houses, take early bath, wear new clothes and perform elaborate prayers to seek divine blessings. A massive and most beautiful pookalam is prepared on this day to welcome the spirit of King Maveli. Girls take great delight in designing the pookalam in the courtyards of their house. The highpoint of the day is the enormous lunch called Onasadya. On this auspicious day, Tellychakkar.com called up a few Malayalee TV stars and asked them how they are going to celebrate this festival. Radio jockey and laughter king of television Suresh Menon shares, “I celebrate this festival with a lot of joy and zeal. Onam is not only celebrated by the Malayalees, but also by all to spread love and prosperity. In my house, this ritual is carried out with much happiness and splendour. We clean up our house and decorate its entrance with flowers in order to welcome the spirit of king Mahakali. We wear new clothes and then perform prayers. I am going to prepare payasam (kheer) and different types of banana chips, rice and curry. This fest is called as Onasadya.” When we got in touch with Indira Krishnan, currently seen in Zee TV’s Afsar Bitiya, she says, “First of all I wish happy Onam to everyone. We celebrate this festival with lot love and fervor. Early in the morning, I went to a temple to seek blessings of the Lord. I also prepared payasam (kheer). We don’t celebrate this festival on a grand scale since we all are working.” Pallavi Purohit, currently seen in Madhubala, observes, “I am not keeping well and since my family is not around, I won’t be celebrating Onam. However, I will be visiting my family friends today.” Talking about her love for the festival, she remarks, “I love it for the food that we get to eat. On this day, we eat food on a banana leaf. My favourite is payasam, it’s a sweet dish.” The actress will also dress up in the typical south Indian attire as she tells us, “I will wear either a white saree with a golden border or a white salwar-kameez with a golden border.” Tellychakkar wishes everyone a very happy Onam.
