We must stop judging men for expressing emotions- Shivangi Verma

Shivangi Verma

MUMBAI: Actress Shivangi Verma known for her roles in Tera Ishq Mera Fitoor, Choti Sarrdaarni, the recently released film Badass Ravi Kumar, and the upcoming Gaurishankar Gauharganj Wale believes that men's mental health deserves far more attention and respect than it currently receives.Speaking about the importance of Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, Shivangi says, "Yes, absolutely. I feel that men's mental health has always been pushed to the side. It’s like people expect men to always be strong and silent, no matter what they're going through. But that’s not fair. They are human too — they feel pain, stress, sadness, just like anyone else."She adds, "Mental health is not about gender, it's about being human. I’m happy that slowly, people are talking about it more now. But still, a lot needs to be done. Men need a safe space too  to cry, to talk, to heal."Talking about how men express themselves less than women, Shivangi shares, "Yes, I’ve seen this around me too. Many men, even close friends or family, just keep everything inside. Maybe they think they’ll be judged if they show their feelings.

Society tells them, ‘boys don’t cry’ — but I think that’s so wrong."She continues, "Crying or sharing feelings is not a weakness. In fact, it takes courage to open up. Men should be allowed to express, without fear or shame."On how women can better understand men’s emotions, Shivangi says,"As women, sometimes we expect men to behave a certain way. But when they become quiet or distant, we don’t always understand that maybe they are struggling inside. Every man is not expressive  but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care."She strongly believes change starts early.

Schools and families should teach boys from a young age that emotions are natural. Also, when male public figures talk about their feelings, it gives courage to others. It helps."She signs off warmly, "I always try to be the kind of person my male friends can talk to freely. It starts with kindness. Slowly, it becomes normal."
