MUMBAI: Kolkata, 21st March 2025 cricket fans worldwide have been eagerly anticipating the grand opening of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), were set to take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a thrilling season opener on Saturday. However, an unexpected weather warning has now placed the much-awaited clash in jeopardy.
Grand Opening Ceremony Under Threat
The IPL 2025 opening ceremony was set to be a spectacular affair, boasting dazzling performances by Movie star sensations such as Varun Dhawan, Disha Patani, Shraddha Kapoor, and the melodious Shreya Ghoshal. Furthermore, megastars including Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Vicky Kaushal, and Kareena Kapoor were expected to grace the event, making it a truly star-studded night.
However, as the cricketing world geared up for the extravaganza, a concerning update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cast a shadow over the celebrations.

Orange Alert Issued for Kolkata
Meteorologists have warned that South Bengal, including Kolkata, will experience significant rainfall and thunderstorms from Thursday through Sunday. The IMD has officially issued an Orange Alert for 22nd March, the very day IPL 2025 is set to commence, while a Yellow Alert remains in place for Sunday.
According to AccuWeather, there is a 74% probability of rain and a 97% cloud cover forecast for Saturday, with evening showers being almost certain at a staggering 90% likelihood.
This raises serious concerns over whether the opening fixture will be completed, or if rain will play spoilsport in what was meant to be an electrifying start to the season.
Match and Ceremony in Doubt
The current forecast suggests that rain is likely to disrupt both the highly anticipated opening ceremony and the match itself. Cricket enthusiasts and organisers alike are now anxiously awaiting further updates on whether enough playtime will be possible to secure a result.
As Kolkata holds its breath, all eyes will be on the skies tomorrow, hoping that the weather relents in time for the IPL 2025 to begin with its usual pomp and splendour.
