MUMBAI: Shruti Sharma is well-known for her roles in television shows, including Namak Issk Ka and Gathbandhan. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, a television series starring Sanjay Leela Bhansali, featured the actress recently.
Shruti Sharma plays Saima in Heeramandi, revealed in an interview with the popular news portal that her father granted her two years to establish herself in the industry. Shruti talked candidly about her preparation for the character of Saima, the difficulties of breaking free from the TV artist label, and other topics.

Shruti revealed that she asks herself, "What's next?" rather than looking at life in terms of milestones. Rather, she remains prepared for favorable occasions and is quite picky about the material she works on. No matter the language or medium, she will always take advantage of a good opportunity when it presents itself. The actress emphasized that she puts in 200% effort into every film, including her most recent Heeramandi.
While speaking about her way of seeing things the talented actress recalled, “If you are an actor, medium doesn't matter, but in our industry, it matters somewhere. A lot of people, they say like, oh, she's from TV. I don't know why this perception is there that, oh, they categorize you as a television artist. But trust me, television teaches you a lot. And I think that was the only challenge which I faced.”
Speaking about the difficulties, Shruti Sharma stated that although it wasn't a big problem, she still felt compelled to show people that being a skilled actor is more important than the medium. The acting on television is the same as other forms of acting.
This belief difference is occasionally made by directors, writers, and actors, but we have the power to change that idea. Viewers want to witness real acting these days. Other than that, she enjoyed every second of portraying Saima and working on Heeramandi.
Regarding family support, she expressed that her brother has consistently been her pillar of strength, stating, "He is my backbone." When she voiced her desire to pursue opportunities in Mumbai and give herself a chance in the industry, her brother and mother wholeheartedly supported her decision.
However, Shruti’s father, while supportive, was understandably reserved about sending her alone to Mumbai, given her lack of experience living independently. He was also concerned about her safety in the city and the industry. Despite his initial reservations, her family stood by her decision.
The Heeramandi actress revealed that she didn't directly try to convince her father. Instead, it was her brother and mother who took on that responsibility while she focused on her creative projects. In the meantime, She wrote and directed a play in Lucknow, which showcased her talents.
However, her father laid down a condition that if she didn't find success within that time frame, she would have to return and consider marriage. Accepting his terms, she embarked on her journey with determination. She said, “He respects the fact that I've fulfilled his dream of becoming an actor and I'm working in a respectful and good way with all their conditions.”
When asked about her preparations for the role of Saima, the actress disclosed that she immersed herself in classical music training for six months. Saima's innate talent for singing required her voice to be perfectly pitched and melodious. To achieve this, she diligently practiced to ensure her dialogues were delivered with precise pitch, tempo, and tone.
Additionally, she focused on refining her diction by reading aloud daily, aiming to match the refined speech style of the era portrayed in the series. She said, “There was thehrav in their language so I tried to maintain that, these were the things which I did.”
She credited her fluency in Urdu to her upbringing in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where Hindi was the primary language when speaking about her diction for Heeramandi. Her own linguistic skills were influenced by her family's fluency in Hindi, particularly her mother's hold of the language.
Her portrayal of Saima's character whose first language is Hindi was made easier by this background. Shruti had not spoken Urdu much herself and took comfort in her natural fluency, which gave her the confidence to tackle the character to the fullest. She was confident that she could manage the language needed for the position because she had acquired the requisite abilities from her background.
Shruti Sharma began her career in show business as a competitor on the reality series India's Next Superstars. She then made the switch to acting, making her screen debut in the television show Gathbandhan. She has contributed to several productions, including Nazar, Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka, and Namak Issk Ka.
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar explores themes of freedom, love, power struggles, and retaliation.
