Noise Of Silence is based on the struggle of the people of Assam, says Firdaus Hassan

MUMBAI: Tellychakkar is back with an exciting piece of information for our avid readers. We recently reported that the first Indian Feature Film of NRC act is soon going to release on Hungama Play and subsequently on MX Player and Sony LIV.

Inspired by true events, as the poster proclaims, ‘Noise of Silence’ is being billed as Bollywood’s first film on the controversial exercise of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in which lakhs were left out in Assam.

Director Saif Baidya says it was made with the sole intention to portray the suffering of lakhs of people in Assam who were excluded from the NRC list and are running from pillar to post to prove their roots.

The web series stars Firdaus Hassan, Puja Jha, Hrishie Raj, Ajay Kundal and Sayantika Nath in the lead roles.

The trailer of the movie is out now and is surely sending ripples of excitement all over. It is said that the core motive of the film is to present facts and not form opinions.

We recently got into an exclusive conversation with Firdaus Hassan who plays one of the leads in the film to understand all the aspects surrounding the film.

Tell us about your journey in the Indian Film Industry

I have been in this industry for 17 years, it has been a very long journey for me. My first film was Lakshaya starring Hritik Roshan and directed by Farhan Akhtar. Then I went on to do Veer Zara and made appearances in several other Bollywood films. This is the first time I am given justice to bring out the inner actor in me and I have put my soul in the character.

What was the main motive behind the film?

See everybody has struggled but NRC in Assam was a pain that almost all the people went through directly or indirectly. It is this pain which we want to portray and bring out through our film. People should wake up to this noise of silence which has prevailed for a long time but still, we became mute spectators of it.

What does the name 'Noise of Silence' portray?

The title of the film portrays the very struggle that went behind this entire trauma faced by the people of Assam. There is a noise, the noise of pain and despair in that silent helpless act imposed by the authorities. When the whole NRC act was imposed, the main problem which occurred was 2 members in the same family were on the government list and two were not. Just by one act people started seeing other people as refugees in their own country. It was more of emotional suffering for the people.

Enlighten us about your character in the movie

My character in the film is of a person who struggles to proof the nationality of his and his wife. My character fights with the authorities for the identity of me and my wife who have been faithful citizens of India all life and now has to go through this. While playing this role there were times I had an emotional breakdown as I was so much into his skin. The couple's name was not in the NRC list and they were made refugees in their own country overnight. The wife is paralyzed so basically, he has to look after the home, then run pillar to post and sttuggle to proof their nationality and then manage his work too. It was an emotionally draining character.

Given the sensitive topic of NRC which led to many protests country-wide, are you ready for any kind of backlash for your movie?

If you ask me, I have studied at Jawaharlal Nehru University, I felt a sense of pride in boasting about my university. But now I feel extremely disappointed with the kind of name-shame which is going on against the prestigious university. I don't think there is any reason for backlash, there are just plain stories of struggle which are based on true events are shown in the movie. I think we are giving people the opportunity to see the actual picture of NRC in Assam through our film.

What made you be a part of this controversial film?

To tell you the truth, when I read the script of the film, I literally cried. It awoke my conscience. There were an instant connection and sympathy for the victims of this act. Their stories needed to be told and so there were no second thoughts to it.

Any message you want to give to the viewers?

Our film is just based on truth, we don't show any political blame game, just plain facts in the form of fictitious characters. We have no other motive but to enlighten the people about the act. Now it's upon the audiences to give their verdict. I urge people to come forward and show some love!

The actor signs off with his motto of life, ''You get what you manifest so always thrive for positivity!''
