Why 2016 is the year of girl power in Bollywood

She is no longer the damsel in distress. She no longer waits for the hero to make the first move. She is more you and me than a conventional heroine. Is it any wonder that 2016 is the year of girl power! We tell you why it is…read on:

Akira:

Sonakshi Sinha was getting too much flak for her eye-candy roles. But the bindaas babe is here to shut us down with a powerful role in Akira. Interestingly, in the Tamil version the movie is remade from, the titular role was played by a hero. Isn’t that reason enough to love this flick? We can’t wait for it to release, can we? Especially after the trailer that had Sona kicking mean ass.

Neerja:

Sonam Kapoor not just looked the part, but also aced the role with her on-point acting. The moving tale had a flight attendant fighting a bunch of terrorists in the most unusual way. Neerja Bhanot lost her life because her duty came before everything else. If the movie didn’t make you salute the brave heart, there’s something seriously wrong!

Jai Gangaajal:

The movie might not have made a mark at the BO, but Priyanka Chopra showed us her star power and pull with this flick. Her acting chops and butt-kicking abilities make her one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood and Hollywood. Koi shaq?

Ki & Ka:

In a major role reversal, Arjun Kapoor became a house-husband to Kareena Kapoor’s high-flying corporate wife. Because why should boys have all the fun, eh? Despite the flawed storyline, it was a good concept that explored the possibility of a house where a woman could be the bread-winner, while her husband took care of the daily chores.

Sarabjit:

Aishwarya’s Dalbir Kaur doesn’t rest till she gets justice for her brother Sarabjit. Even though the movie is about his trials in a Pakistani jail, it’s his sister’s story as she struggles to free him and maintains his innocent even after his unfortunate death in the jail.

More power to women!
