15 Years of Ranbir Kapoor: A look at the ups and downs of the Brahmastra star

MUMBAI: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, and Salman Khan was released on 9th November 2007. It marked Ranbir and Sonam’s Bollywood debut, and the former went on to prove his mettle as a star and an actor with his movies that followed. But, in these 15 years, Ranbir has had many ups and downs in his career.

While for Saawariya, Ranbir got praises for his performance and even won Best Debut awards, the film was a flop at the box office. His second release Bachna Ae Haseeno was also not a big hit, and was an average grosser. But, with Wake Up Sid, Ranbir bounced back and it became his first hit, and then there was no looking back for him. While Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Raajneeti became hits, with Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Ranbir proved that he is a good actor, although the film bombed at the box office.

2011, 2012, and 2013 were great years for Ranbir as he gave back-to-back three super hits, Rockstar, Barfi, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. But, things went haywire with Besharam. The movie, which also starred his parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, was a disaster at the box office. After Besharam, Ranbir starred in back-to-back flops like Roy, Bombay Velvet, and Tamasha.

After 2015, Ranbir’s career has been very bumpy. While in 2016 he gave a hit like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, in 2017 he once again had a flop like Jagga Jasoos. In 2018, he gave his career’s biggest hit with Sanju which was a biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt.

Earlier this year, he was seen in Shamshera which marked his comeback after a gap of four years. The film failed to make a mark at the box office, but clearly Brahmastra gave Ranbir’s career the much-needed boost as the film did well at the ticket windows and became one of the highest grossing films of 2022.

Now, Ranbir has an interesting line up of films. He will be seen in Luv Ranjan’s next which also stars Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role. Moviegoers are excited to watch their jodi on the big screens. He also has Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal and Brahmastra 2 lined up.
