Aamir Khan calls out the growing trend of judging films only by their box office earnings

Actor Aamir Khan expressed concern over the industry's increasing focus on box office earnings, stating it is "unfortunate" that films are now primarily compared based on their numerical success rather than their creative merit or audience reception, calling for greater financial transparency in the film industry.

MUMBAI: Indian cinema actor and producer Aamir Khan recently offered a thoughtful critique of the contemporary film industry's increasing obsession with box office statistics, lamenting that commercial numbers have begun to supersede artistic quality as the main yardstick for a film's success.

Speaking at a prominent industry event, the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the actor urged audiences and media alike to return to appreciating cinema based on its narrative and emotional impact.

Aamir described the current scenario as unfortunate, noting that the focus has shifted entirely to financial performance.

He stated, "It is unfortunate that people are comparing films based on the numbers.

Earlier, we never did that. We would compare films based on how much we liked them, you know?"

The celebrated star, known for his selective choice of projects, reflected on a previous era when a movie's quality was determined by its ability to resonate with the viewers and critics, rather than the size of its collections.

He acknowledged that the fixation on earnings is a cyclical trend, adding, "But these things come and go. They come and go."

In addition to commenting on the evaluative criteria, Aamir also passionately advocated for greater transparency regarding the financial performance of films.

He suggested that box office figures should be open and easily accessible to the public, much like in territories such as the United States.

He emphasised, "Really, this should be transparent. What are we hiding? We know how many screens the film is released on."

He referenced industry metrics used abroad to illustrate how easily collections are tracked, suggesting a similar system should be implemented in India to foster honesty and consistency in reporting earnings.

Aamir expressed his curiosity as to why such secrecy exists in the first place, especially since the numbers have now become a primary criterion for evaluating success.

The actor, whose highly anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par is currently in production, concluded his thoughts by reminding the audience of what truly constitutes cinematic legacy.

He asserted that ultimately, despite the fleeting fascination with record-breaking figures, only the quality of the storytelling endures in the collective memory of the audience.

A good film, he implied, will always be remembered, irrespective of its opening weekend tally.
