MUMBAI: DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, had a meaningful discussion with superstar Aamir Khan and his ex-wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, following a special screening of their critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies in the Supreme Court. Several judges from the highest court attended the movie on Friday as part of a program aimed at promoting gender sensitization.

Aamir disclosed during the talk that he was motivated by both “desire and fear” to make Laapataa Ladies. The actor-producer reflected on his career and revealed, “During COVID, at the age of 56, I realised this is the last leg of my career. I might have 15 more years of active work left, and I wanted to give back. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought I could do one film a year, but as a producer, I can back multiple stories that I feel strongly about.”

Renowned for supporting films with societal resonance, Aamir emphasized his commitment to nurturing new filmmaking. “Through producing, I can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process. Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies,” he explained.

When Chief Justice Chandrachud asked Kiran Rao about the inspiration from the film, she replied that it all began with an original script written by Biplab Goswami.

They decided to buy the rights after Aamir came across the script in a Screen Writers Association competition in 2020. “We infused more humor into the dramatic narrative,” Kiran said, noting that the trip had been difficult and long because of the way the film industry had changed.

They defied recommendations to premiere the movie in theatres instead of going straight to OTT platforms. “The film has received a lot of love from the audience, and I’m glad we took it to the big screen,” Kiran said.
