MUMBAI: Celina Jaitly, known for her film work, has recently shared a heart-wrenching post on social media detailing the long and terrifying ordeal surrounding her brother, Major Vikrant Kumar Jaitly (Retd.), who has been held in detention in the Middle East since September 2024.

The former actress described her life as "a countdown of fear, hope & unbearable silence," noting that it has been "1 year, 2 months, 17 days, 443 days in total, 10,632 hours, 637,920 minutes" without her brother.

Take a look at the post:

Major Jaitly, a decorated officer who served in the Indian Army's elite 3 Para Special Forces unit, had been living in the UAE since 2016 for work with a trading and risk-management firm when he was reportedly taken into custody.

According to Celina's post, he was first "abducted, held incommunicado for eight long months," before being kept in detention.

The actress shared the deep anguish and worry she holds for her brother's physical and mental state, especially since he suffers from multiple injuries sustained during his years in the line of duty.

She recalled the single, painful phone call he managed to make to his family. She wrote, "I am waiting to hear his voice, I am waiting to see his face, I dread what they have done to him.

I dread it because only I know who he was when he was whole, & I dread it because I know what he managed to communicate in that one final call… A call was made to the only number he could still remember.

A call carrying more pain than words. A call carrying more truth than the world is ready to face."

Celina directly appealed to the Indian government, urging them to intervene with the same swift, decisive action that led to the release of the eight Indian naval veterans detained in Qatar.

She framed her brother’s situation as a matter of national security, stating, "He has given his youth, his strength, his mind, his life to Bharat. He has lived & bled for the flag.

As Bharat rises as a global force, our soldiers & veterans are becoming easy targets abroad." She continued, "This is not just personal anymore; this pattern of picking up our soldiers & veterans abroad… is this now jeopardising our own National Security instead? We must ask this question. We must demand answers."

The Delhi High Court recently took cognisance of the case, directing the Ministry of External Affairs to appoint a nodal officer to facilitate communication and provide legal and medical assistance to Major Jaitly.

Celina vowed that she would not give up the fight, concluding her post with a quote from her late father, Colonel V.K. Jaitly (SM): "If you want to honour a soldier, be an Indian worth dying for."

The family remains hopeful that the ongoing legal and diplomatic efforts will ultimately lead to the safe and swift return of Major Vikrant Kumar Jaitly.
