Dia Mirza has consistently been an outspoken supporter of relevant issues, from selecting a female priest for her wedding to her notable dedication to sustainability.
Her stance is always clear, transparent, and deeply anchored in her convictions. She is one of the few celebrities who consistently speak up for what is right.
The Sanju actress recently discussed the issue of ageism that women face in the film industry, speaking openly at the We The Women 2025 event.
She highlighted how little the casting processes in the industry have changed over time.
Dia specifically noted the continuing trend of younger women being cast alongside male co-stars who are substantially their seniors.
She was quoted as saying, “I find it interesting that I’m cast opposite actors in their late 50s, 60s, and even 70s, and we’re meant to be seen as romantic equals on screen."
Dia further called out the industry for its failure to cast younger male actors opposite older female leads.
She argued that it remains unthinkable for a woman in her sixties or seventies to be cast as the romantic lead opposite a man in his forties.
This glaring double standard has, according to her, been institutionalised by the industry for many years.
She pointed out that the industry stops considering women as "desirable" after a certain age.
According to her, pairings where the woman is older than the man do not exist because the industry still struggles to portray women as "desirable," "relevant," and "central" as they grow older.
She underlined that her concern is not with males ageing, but with the way women are disadvantaged as they age.
"It’s about women being denied the ability to age with visibility, decency, and complexity on television," she remarked.
Following the We The Women 2025 event, Dia Mirza shared a long post on social media. She wrote: “The power years, truly! Women over 40 know their hearts and minds. I don’t believe anyone gets to decide when a woman peaks, when she becomes irrelevant, or when her story ends. We decide that for ourselves. Always."
In her caption, she went on to say that women are redefining expectations and refusing to vanish from someone else's timeline rather than seeking permission.
She also complimented writer Barkha Dutt for creating the environment for this important conversation.
