Dulquer Salmaan opens up about his experience on hindi film sets — Here’s what he revealed

This article details Dulquer Salmaan's candid account of his experience working on Hindi film sets, contrasting it sharply with the culture of the Malayalam film industry. The actor revealed that he was initially "pushed around" and overlooked on Mumbai sets, forcing him to intentionally project an image of a "big star" with an entourage to gain basic respect, personal space, and attention.

MUMBAI: Dulquer Salmaan, whose career has primarily been in Malayalam cinema, began his adventure in the Hindi-language film industry with the 2018 film Karwaan.

He subsequently appeared in the Sonam Kapoor-led The Zoya Factor and Chup: Revenge Of The Artist.

In a recent interview, Dulquer spoke openly about his experience working on these Mumbai film sets and the stark contrast with the nearly non-existent entourage culture present in the Malayalam film market.

He recounted being "pushed around" and disregarded when working on projects in the North, stating that he had to intentionally create an illusion of being a great star merely to secure personal space and attention.

He noticed that in mainstream Hindi movies, fame is primarily driven by perception.

Dulquer stated, “My two people and I would just get pushed around on set when I did Hindi films here,” he said in an interview.

“I have to create this illusion of being this enormous star. I wouldn't be able to find chairs else! There wouldn't be room for me to look at the monitors. It’d be a tremendous crowd of people."

He further noted that if an actor arrives in a luxury car with many people surrounding them, they are perceived to be major stars.

“I realised it’s all perception. If you come in a fancy car with a lot of people, then suddenly the perception is, ‘Oh, this is a star.’ Which is sad because that’s not where my energy should go," he quoted.

He also emphasised how different the culture is on Malayalam movie sets, where private chefs and numerous vanity vans are unheard of, and the cost of an entourage is minimal.

“We never had any luxury on set. We’d shoot all over the state, get permission from a house, pay the owners, and that would be where we change or use the restrooms. That was always the practice," he told.

Addressing the subject of entourage expenditures, Dulquer Salmaan stated that he believes individuals should personally bear the cost of their desired amenities.

"Most of us absorb our own costs," he remarked. "If I am being paid X, then X minus whatever my entourage costs or luxuries I want... I can absorb it.

It is not the end of the world. There is no limit to perks when something is free; you enjoy it more and keep wanting more," he explained.

Regarding his professional endeavours, Dulquer was most recently seen in the Tamil-language period thriller Kaantha, which was released last month.

He recently announced his next film, titled I’M Game.

Taking to his social media account, Dulquer Salmaan shared the announcement poster, writing simply, "READY ??". This new project marks his return to Malayalam cinema following King of Kotha, which was released in 2023.
