An atrocious and ridiculous comment from Maharashtra State Women’s Commission Member and NCP leader Asha Mirje on Nirbhaya, the girl who was brutally gang raped in December 2012, has ruffled a few feathers in Bollywood and rightly so. Asha Mirjee questioned Nirbhaya’s choice of going out to watch a movie late at 11 in the night.
“We have to be careful. We have to ask ourselves, where I am going, with whom I am going, what I am going for, do I really need to go to that place,” Asha Mirje was quoted saying.
While NCP washed its hands off from Asha’s statement dismissing it as her own personal opinion, Bollywood has come out strongly, criticizing Asha for passing a silly and illogical statement on a sensitive issue.
Farhan Akhtar took to Twitter and registered his strong protest at this insensitive statement. Farhan who also spearheads a social campaign called MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) wrote on twitter:
Dear Mrs. Mirje, Nirbhaya did not have to go for a film at 11pm. She CHOSE to go for a film at 11pm. And that was her constitutional right.
The tweet was immediately picked up by Aditi Rao Hydari who along with many of Farhan Akhtar’s fans re-tweeted it.
