MUMBAI: The young actor Meezaan Jafri, son of veteran performer Jaaved Jaaferi, recently provided an honest and nuanced perspective on the highly debated topic of nepotism within the Indian film industry.
In a candid interview, Meezaan acknowledged the widespread public perception of an easy entry but insisted that inheriting a film lineage presents its own distinct set of difficulties and scrutiny.
Addressing the common assumption that actors from film families have an effortless path to success, Meezaan stated unequivocally that this is a misconception.

He explained, "One misconception is that we have it easy. Someone who says that is quite stupid.
Yes, of course, we have it easy in a very different perspective, but then we have it difficult also in a different perspective, because that baggage and burden are also there on that star kid.
It’s easier to come in with a clean slate than to come up with so much baggage."
The actor, who initially made his acting debut with Malaal and is currently garnering attention for his performance in De De Pyaar De 2, emphasised that every individual’s journey in the competitive creative field is challenging.
He urged the public to recognise the struggles faced by all artists, regardless of background, asserting, "Everyone has their pros and cons. Everyone has their own journey.
And instead of pointing fingers, I think people should understand it's very difficult for everyone at every stage."
Meezaan also confirmed the existence of professional cliques and "groupism" in the industry, noting that many influential entities and production houses align themselves with certain talent management agencies, creating closed circles.
"Everyone has their own set of actors or people in their own groups, and a lot of people have plugged in their talent management agencies with their production houses," he detailed. "Everyone is just working within that circle, and I get that."
Despite these challenges, he remains singularly focused on letting his performance be his defining factor, stressing the importance of making careful, deliberate choices.
He believes that only the artist knows the true scope of the opportunities they are offered, stating, "I've taken the best decisions according to whatever was on my plate, and I'll continue doing so. It’s better to take the right decision than, for the sake of doing work, just do anything."
Meezaan began his career working behind the camera as an assistant director for celebrated filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on major productions like Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat.
He concluded that he prefers to work quietly and avoid unnecessary publicity, stating that what matters most is the audience's appreciation for his craft.
