Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan candidly stated that she doesn't want her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, to get married, labelling the institution itself as "outdated." She emphasised that the legality of marriage is unnecessary for a meaningful relationship, stressing that compatibility and physical attraction are vital for a lasting bond in today's generation.

MUMBAI: Jaya Bachchan is an iconic Indian figure, celebrated as one of the greatest actresses of Hindi cinema and a distinguished politician.

She pioneered a natural style of acting in Hindi and Bengali films, favouring realism. Her numerous accolades include ten Filmfare Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award) and the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour in India.

Complementing her artistic legacy, she has maintained a significant political career, serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party since 2004.

In a candid interview during the 'We The Women' event in Mumbai, veteran actor and politician Jaya Bachchan sparked a massive discussion by offering unconventional advice to her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda.

The actor, who has been married to Amitabh Bachchan for over five decades, openly stated that she views the traditional institution of marriage as increasingly irrelevant for today's youth and directly advised Navya against it.

When the conversation turned to her granddaughter's life and whether she would be fine with Navya following her footsteps, Jaya quickly responded.

"I don't want Navya to get married," she declared. When the host pressed her on whether she truly believes the institution of marriage is "outdated," the actor agreed wholeheartedly: "Yes, absolutely."

Jaya explained her reasoning by pointing out the rapid changes in social dynamics and the increased independence of the younger generation.

"I am a grandmother now. Navya turns 28 in a few days. I am too old to advise young girls today on how to bring up children."

She commented, adding, "Things have changed so much, and today little children are so smart, they will outsmart you."

She stressed that a relationship's validity should not be defined by a legal certificate or societal pressure.

"The legality of marriage doesn't define a relationship. Just enjoy life!" she advised.

She compared the dilemma of marriage to the famous saying about the 'Delhi ka laddoo': "It's like the Delhi laddoo: eat it, and you're in trouble; don't eat it, and you’re in trouble. Either way, it's difficult."

Jaya also shared her progressive views on what sustains a long-term relationship, something she had previously discussed with Navya on her podcast.

She was forthright about the importance of physical compatibility alongside emotional connection.

"People will find it objectionable coming from me, but physical attraction and compatibility are also very important," she stated.

"In our times, we couldn't experiment, but today's generation does, and why shouldn't they? Because that is also responsible for a long-lasting relationship.

If there isn't a physical relationship, it's not going to last very long. You can't sustain it on love, fresh air, and adjustment alone, I feel."

Navya Naveli Nanda, who is the daughter of Shweta Bachchan and industrialist Nikhil Nanda, and granddaughter of Amitabh  Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan is already charting her own course, focusing on her healthcare startup, Aara Health, and pursuing an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad, aligning with her grandmother's emphasis on personal fulfilment and independence over traditional expectations.
