Bhatt expressed surprise at Rajesh Khanna's unmatched fame by saying, “I had not seen stardom like Rajesh Khanna’s ever. Nowadays, stars benefit greatly from digital platforms. Back then, with just a couple of film magazines and limited prints, Rajesh Khanna managed to create a never-before-seen level of fame.”
Reflecting on his work with Khosla, Bhatt shared, “We later made Mera Gaon Mera Desh, starring Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna. Vinod was not just a colleague but a great friend who played a significant role in my life. Without him, I don’t think I would have become the person I am today.”
Bhatt went on to narrate his journey, recalling the making of Mera Gaon Mera Desh in Udaipur and complimenting Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal on the film's memorable music. He went on to discuss their work together on Do Chor, which was produced and directed by Khosla's assistant, Padmanabh. The movie was filmed in Goa.
Bhatt's real breakthrough came with his sixth film, Arth, a semi-autobiographical portrait of his supposed romance with Parveen Babi though he had a few low-grossing pictures to his credit. Arth won praise from critics with two National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards.
With a series of hits in the 1980s and 90s, including Saaransh, Janam, Sadak, and Aashiqui, this success turned Bhatt's career around and cemented his place among the most successful directors of the time.
