MUMBAI: In the movie, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are seen together in the same shot. The actors gathered in 1993 to film a special appearance for the movie Pehla Nasha, and now director Ashutosh Gowariker has revealed how he was able to pull off the casting coup of all time.
After over ten years as an actor, Ashutosh Gowariker made his directorial debut with Pehla Nasha. Ashutosh made his acting debut in Ketan Mehta's Holi, which also starred Aamir Khan. Later, Ashutosh worked on other projects with Shah Rukh, including Circus, Chamatkar, and Kabhi Ha Kabhi Na.
Aamir, Shah Rukh, Saif Ali Khan, and Sudesh Berry were all assembled by Ashutosh Gowariker for a sequence in his directorial debut, which included Deepak Tijori. The director said how the performers, including the two celebrities, had unwavering faith in him as a director- even before he became one- in an interview with popular news portal.
He said, “There is Saif, Rahul Roy, Sudhish Berry in the scene, who all, at that time, had their lead films. That film I wanted to direct. The desire that I wanted to make my debut as a director was a known thing for all these actors. For some strange reason, at that time, they all felt, ‘Tu achcha director banega!’ Be it Aamir or Shah Rukh or anyone else, they had that belief.”
The director remembered, So when this came about, that I am going to do my debut, they all were so happy. The feeling was, ‘Yaar Ashu ki pehli picture hai so we must be a part of it.’So they came in good camaraderie.”
The previously mentioned scene is a humorous award show scene in which the actors play themselves and make references to their own movies. Deepak is greeted by Shah Rukh, who tells him, “Tumne toh Chamatkar kardiya, Gentleman. Main toh tumhara Deewana hogaya,” meanwhile, Aamir added, “Lekin lekin lekin Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.”
Ashutosh Gowariker revealed how it was a role reversal for him to go from working with Aamir and Shah Rukh as co-stars to now directing them on the Pehla Nasha sets. Ashutosh Gowariker is presently starring in Netflix's survival drama series Kaala Paani. Later, the director went on to helm the feature films Lagaan and Swades, which starred Aamir and Shah Rukh, respectively.
“It was fun shooting that sequence. We shot that scene and celebrated that night! Juhi was someone who comes only in the last scene of the film, but she was also a part of the movie. With all of them, I had also done films as a co-actor. So it was a great experience later directing them. That bonding was different. Because here I was doing films with them as an actor but later I was telling them what to do!” he recalled.
In Kaala Paani, Ashutosh makes a comeback to acting. The show centers on the lives of people who are stranded on an island and have no way to get out. The series, which is made by Posham Pa Pictures, features script by Biswapati Sarkar, Amit Golani, Sandeep Saket, and Nimisha Misra and is directed by Sameer Saxena and Amit Golani.
Mona Singh, Amey Wagh, Sukant Goel, Vikas Kumar, Arushi Sharma, Radhika Mehrotra, Chinmay Mandlekar, and Poornima Indrajith are also featured in the survival drama.
