MUMBAI: India’s Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty has now taken charge as the Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA).
The announcement, made by the Department of Cultural Affairs, also named actress and actors’ association secretary Kuku Parameswaran as Vice-Chairperson, while C. Ajoy continues as Secretary. The newly appointed 26-member General Council will serve a three-year term, shaping the vision and direction of Kerala’s most significant film body.
For Resul, this is more than a post — it’s a promise. “I don’t see this as a position of power but as a responsibility,” he said at the inaugural ceremony. “The Academy has been part of my journey from the very beginning. To return now, in a role that allows me to serve and strengthen it, feels deeply personal.”
The Academy Award winner for Best Sound Mixing for Slumdog Millionaire reflected on his journey from a modest village in Kerala to global acclaim. “Whatever I am today, I owe to this land and its people. The Academy gave me my first exposure to cinema, and the film fraternity of Kerala gave me my foundation. This role gives me a chance to give back — to the industry, to the art, and to the next generation.”
Industry observers see his appointment as a transformative moment. With his global perspective and grounded sensibility, Pookutty is expected to bring new energy into Kerala’s creative ecosystem — bridging traditional storytelling with new technology and international collaborations.
