MUMBAI: The upcoming fourth instalment of the successful Dabangg action franchise, which stars Salman Khan as the iconic cop Chulbul Pandey, is generating intense speculation, not just for its plot but for who will helm the project.
Producer Arbaaz Khan had recently confirmed that Dabangg 4 is definitely in the works.
However, amidst renewed public attacks from the director of the first film, Abhinav Kashyap, new reports circulating in the industry suggest that Salman Khan himself might take on the director's duties for the first time in the series.
Reports from certain media outlets suggest that the star is "likely" to direct the film, with production possibly kicking off next year.
While there has been no official confirmation from the Khan family or the production house, the news follows a very public and heated exchange between Salman Khan and Abhinav Kashyap, who directed the 2010 blockbuster Dabangg.
Kashyap has repeatedly levelled serious accusations against Salman Khan and his brothers, alleging interference during the original film's making, cutting down roles of co-stars like Mahie Gill and Arbaaz Khan, and displaying ill-mannered behaviour towards senior actors like the late Om Puri.
Kashyap claimed that Salman refused to perform a scene requiring him to touch Om Puri's feet, allegedly telling the veteran actor, "If you do not want to do it, then leave the film."
Kashyap has maintained that the film’s final edit hurt the balance of the story and that Mahie Gill was treated unfairly.
Salman Khan recently addressed these ongoing allegations indirectly during a television appearance, choosing to defend himself and focus on the director's current lack of professional success.
Without naming Kashyap, Salman Khan questioned the director's conduct, stating: "After such behaviour, nobody will work with you.
Why would someone destroy themselves by attacking people who once offered them work?" He also suggested that the director should focus on his own family and career, adding, "I want to see you grow; you are a talented man. Do not go down this lane, take a U-turn from this highway."
The potential shift of Salman Khan into the director's chair for Dabangg 4 is seen by some as a direct response to the recurring controversy, ensuring complete creative control over the franchise.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting an official announcement regarding the directorial front for the highly anticipated return of Chulbul Pandey.
