MUMBAI: Women in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movies are strong and independent but sad. Be it  Manisha Koirala, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, or Deepika Padukone; he shows the position they have in the society. The women in Bhansali's film have smashed patriarchy, overcome sadness, and have been courageous. However, they have suffered a lot and have had tragedy mixed with heroic endings.

Paro (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) in Devdas

If you see Devdas, Paro's love story is filled with tragedy. They have been neighbours as well as childhood friends. When Paro grows up, her grandmother suggests her marriage to Devdas. His mom rejects her because of her economic status. She gets married later in a zamindari system. Devdas turns alcoholic and his brooding for Paro does not end. The tragic end of their love story is that she never gets to see Devdas even for one last time.

Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) in Bajirao Mastani

There comes a moment in the film when Kashibai tells Bajirao that his relationship with Mastani is a breach of her trust and pride. Her dialogue, "Aapne toh humse hamara guroor cheen liya". This dialogue makes us understand that Kashibai knew that she was silently suffering.

Gangubai (Alia Bhatt) in Gangubai Kathiawadi

In the film, Bhansali beautifully shows that she is sold to a brothel for Rs 500 by the love of her life whom she trusted a lot. She also falls in love with Shantanu Maheshwari, who becomes her love interest; but Gangubai breaks her heart by being cold.
