Shah Rukh Khan reveals he acquired rights to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas and says it turned out to be ‘one of the best experiences of my life'

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan has become the first Indian to win the Locarno Film Festival's Pardo alla Carriera Ascona-Locarno Tourism award. Shah Rukh recently went to the film festival in Switzerland, where the public saw a screening of his 2002 movie Devdas.

Before the film's release, Salman Khan stated that he had already bought the rights to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial long ago and referred to the process as "one of the best experiences of his life". Before Devdas's screening at the Locarno Film Festival, Shah Rukh Khan said during the masterclass that Red Chillies Entertainment, his production firm, had bought the film's rights.

"It turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. So much so that we as a production company bought the rights of this film back, and I’m very, very proud that it belongs to our company now," SRK said.

Shah Rukh reflected on the legacy of Devdas while sharing insights about how the 2002 epic movie was released. SRK shared that when Bhansali wanted to direct the film, it felt like an "outdated" concept as 18 versions of the film already existed and there was immense pressure on the makers to bring a fresh version to the screen.

The superstar went on to say that the public at the time preferred to watch light-hearted films, such as college musicals, and that India was going through a cultural transition towards a more liberalized attitude. The Devdas actor referred to it as the "most expensive film" made in India, noting that its producers vanished and the movie faced financial difficulties.

Speaking about his time on the movie set while shooting Devdas, Shah Rukh Khan recalled how much fun he had while he paid tribute to his mother, who loved the 2002 masterpiece. The famous actor disclosed that he was told not to sign Bhansali's movie since it wasn't "his zone," but he chose to star in it to accomplish a childhood ambition and to honor his mother.

In addition to Shah Rukh, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, and numerous others starred in Devdas. The movie was adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1917 novel of the same name.
