MUMBAI: The towering gates of Mannat in Bandra, Mumbai, are not just the entrance to a house; they are the physical realisation of a cinematic dream.

This massive property stands as one of the most recognised residences in India, a pilgrimage spot for fans, but its history reveals a remarkable journey of aspiration and eventual ownership for its resident, Shah Rukh Khan.

Before the actor purchased the property in 2001, it was a beautiful sea-facing bungalow known as Villa Vienna, owned by the Kekoo Gandhy family, who leased it to the star's acquaintance.

When Khan first encountered the property, he was immediately captivated by its location and architecture.

The most famous anecdote surrounding the home involves the film Yes Boss (1997).

During a schedule for the film, Khan was shooting outside the house, and he vividly recalled telling his team, "I will buy this one day."

This statement, made years before his financial ability or opportunity aligned, became a powerful personal prophecy.

The acquisition was a major milestone. He reportedly purchased the house for around ₹13.2 crore (which is now valued significantly higher, potentially over ₹200 crore). At the time of purchase, the house was initially named "Jannat" (meaning Heaven).

However, following its extensive, four-year-long renovation, the superstar decided to rename it "Mannat" (meaning a Vow or a Wish) as a nod to the long-held dream it represented.

The house was transformed by his wife, Gauri Khan, who is an interior designer, blending neo-classical architecture with modern interiors and personal touches.

Today, the six-story mansion covers a vast area, incorporating multiple residential wings, private offices, a gymnasium, a library, and a basement parking area, establishing it as a true landmark and a testament to the unparalleled success of one of the world's biggest screen stars.
