Sir Alfred Hitchcock Birth Anniversary: From Amitabh Bachchan’s Benaam to Bobby Deol Humraaz, 6 Hindi films that were remakes of the Hollywood director

Hitchcock’s films were ahead of its time and inspired many Hindi films. Here is the list of some of them.
Alfred Hitchcock

MUMBAI: The legendary Alfred Hitchcock was born in Essex, England, on August 13, 1899. Although he passed almost 40 years ago, his legacy—which includes a number of unforgettable classics—continues to inspire filmmakers and captivate audiences decades after his death. Known as the Master of Suspense, for good reason, some of his best-known films are Rope, Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, Dial M For Murder, The Birds, North By Northwest, and Frenzy.

Hitchcock’s films were ahead of its time and inspired many Hindi films. Here is the list of some of them.

Kohraa

Waheeda Rehman, Biswajeet, and Lalita Pawar appeared in Biren Nag's 1964 blockbuster. It's a reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock's well-known mystery thriller Rebecca, which tells the story of a wealthy widower's wife who marries him but is tormented in her new home by memories of his first wife. Rebecca, which is also a literary adaption, will return to this list.

Jewel Thief

Dev Anand devotees would recall this iconic heist thriller, which was helmed by Vijay Anand. Actually, two Hitchcock movies—To Catch a Thief (1955) and Vertigo (1958)—had an impact on the production. If nothing else, the originals lacked timeless hits like "Hothon Mein Aisi Baat" and "Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara".

Chakravyuha

Who would have guessed that the man behind family dramas like Chitchor and Choti Si Baat would be a Hitchcockian? Starring Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Mehra, Basu Chatterjee's lone action thriller spy movie is somewhat based on another espionage thriller, The 39 Steps.

Benaam

In this 1974 movie, which also starred Moushumi Chatterjee, Madan Puri, and Prem Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan played the lead role. The movie's story revolves around an innocent family who, while on vacation, becomes entangled in a spy plan. It is a reimagining of Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, starring James Stewart and Doris Day.

Inaam Dus Hazaar

Hitchcock's North By Northwest is among his most entertaining films to date. The story revolves on an advertising executive who gets mistaken for a spy and is pursued by both the police and criminal organizations across the area. The 1987 Hindi film Inaam Dus Hazaar, starring Sanjay Dutt and Meenakshi Seshadri, was inspired by the storyline.

Humraaz

Dial M for Murder influenced Abbas-Mustan’s movie, which starred Bobby Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Akshaye Khanna. Humraaz, which is well-known for Himesh Reshammiya's songs and Akshaye's first negative portrayal, is actually more similar to the Hitchcockian film that inspired it, A Perfect Murder (1998), starring Michael Douglas.
