The beautiful Sridevi is making her come back to Bollywood with English Vinglish. This Gauri Shinde-directed film deals with problems of English language that many Indians face.
Sridevi plays simple house wife Shashi, who does not know the lingua franca of the world, has to go to the US for her sister’s delivery. How she grapples with the above issue and decides to overcome them by enrolling in an English speaking course is what forms the crux of this light-hearted story.
Talking about the film, Sri says, “One of main reasons why we chose this simple and sweet film as my comeback vehicle was its script. It is very close to my heart, I really feel for Shashi. I for one would have done this project at any stage of my career.
Secondly and no-less important was that for the first time, I got to work with Gauri who is a very talented filmmaker. She made me feel very comfortable. I must also thank producer R. Balki (Gauri’s better half) for being there.”
When asked if she had any problems with English, she says ‘no’ in her Tamil accent. The film dubbed in Tamil and Telugu with the same title has Sri use her own voice.
Looking ahead, Sri whose last film was Judaai, avers, “I would love to do more movies but that would depend on the love and support of the audience.” When we asked her about the new crop of actors, she remarks, “All of them are very talented and I would love to work with them all.” So did you miss the arc lights in your long hiatus? “No being a producer’s (Boney Kapoor) wife, I was always on set. Plus, I was very busy taking care of my family,” she declares.
English Vinglish also has a cameo appearance by Amitabh Bachchan and Sri is very happy to work with him again. “Amitji is a very nice person and I always enjoyed acting with him,” she concedes. Sri, who gained a lot of popularity from Mr India, was hopeful that her husband would make a sequel of it in its 25 anniversary and she would definitely love to be a part of it again.
Ending the conversation, Sri observes, “The entire cast including French actor Mehdi Nebbou, Adil Hussain, and Priya Anand and the crew of English Vinglish have given their best and I hope and pray that the film does very well when it releases on 5 October (2012).”
