The Steady Rise of Avinash Tiwary: From a Promising Newcomer to an In-demand Star

Avinash Tiwary

MUMBAI: Avinash Tiwary’s rise from being an unmissable Bihari boy to transitioning into a director’s favourite is proof that he has built a strong foundation for his empire. When the birthday boy first appeared on screens with Milind Dhaimade’s Tu Hai Mera Sunday, he stood out by playing a quirky and layered character that kept you wondering. At that time, nobody had even given it a thought that Avinash would become the Majnu, not only to his on-screen Laila, but also to his female fans!

Last year, Laila Majnu re-released in the theatres, and fans rushed to the theatres to experience this cult classic, to witness the madness and tragedy of Qais Bhat. As his appeal pushed the film to become a box office phenomenon, he proved that sometimes an actor’s fame is strongly built by the people, and the only opinion that matters is that of the audience. After Laila Majnu, Avinash Tiwary proved that he could hold his own in Bullbul and a segment in Ghost Stories. Be it gently anchoring Bulbbul or being a quirky character in Ghost Stories, Avinash solidified his screen presence. Even in The Girl on the Train, Avinash brought a solid presence that lingered, even if the script did not give him much to work with.

His filmography took a promising shift with Neeraj Pandey’s Khakee: The Bihar Chapter and Excel Entertainment’s Bambai Meri Jaan. The actor got into the skin of characters who were not born criminals, but were moulded because of the situation. He portrayed gangsters with such raw and rugged energy that he blurred the lines between being an actor and living a character. During his transition from Laila Majnu to Bambai Meri Jaan, Avinash Tiwary highlighted his ability to disappear into roles only to bring strong visibility to his characters. Even in Sikandar Ka Muqaddar, Avinash’s character turned out to be the catalyst for the engaging plot.

Somewhere in between the characters and films, Avinash attracted a cult-like following, where his fans would leave everything behind to watch him on-screen. While he was creating his own niche, nobody thought he would seamlessly transition into a hot Bollywood guy in Madgaon Express and take the audience on a rollercoaster of his charm and comedy.
With The Mehta Boys, he marked a sharp curve yet again by diving into a raw zone of vulnerability and something entirely intimate - a strained relationship of a father and son. He stepped into the son’s character and made viewers sit down with their emotions. Not only did he play a resonant role in The Mehta Boys, but he also gifted a sweet thought about reconciliation, to heal and to come closer to your loved ones.

That’s the journey of Avinash Tiwary. He is climbing the ladder at his own pace, without any noise, without any rush. And with each role, he’s drowning into the character so deeply that he brings invisibility to himself. There are actors who act, and there are performers whom you don’t see coming on-screen till the time they are everywhere, and that’s the very beauty of Avinash Tiwary.
