Trailer review of Dhoom 3

Dhoom 3
Rating - **1/2 Let’s be brutally honest here. We watched the trailer of this year’s most anticipated action packed movie Dhoom 3 at IMAX twice yesterday and if truth be told; we were neither delighted nor disappointed. The two and a half minute trailer fails to offer anything new from a viewer’s perspective. The trailer opens up with a panoramic snapshot of the tungsten lit skyscrapers of America the way you would see it in Hollywood movies. That’s enough for one to guess about the impending things to come. And true to our guess, things pan out the way it happens in Hollywood movies. From high-octane action sequence to high profile bank robbery, it looks like the makers of Dhoom 3 have left no stone unturned in making this movie look like one coming out from the stables of Hollywood. Well, all this seems good but we hope the movie has a good plot to back it up with and that’s where the trailer falls short for it hardly reveals anything about the storyline. What we liked in the trailer - Let’s start with the ladies first. Katrina Kaif looks like million bucks. Her stunning face and supple body (especially the scene where she places her oh-so- hot leg on Aamir’s shoulder) would surely shoot up the male testosterone level. The locales in America have been wisely and carefully chosen and they promise to offer a great visual treat to viewers. The action sequences look better choreographed and promises to be on par with Hollywood standards. But these are just minion reasons. You should watch Dhoom 3 only and only for Aamir Khan. The superstar will be seen playing an anti-hero for the first time in his 25 year old Bollywood career. Not just that, you will also see the perfectionist actor leaping off a towering building, doing somersaults and performing magic tricks. What we didn’t like in the trailer – This is a movie that largely depends on special effects to create its charm but sadly the effects look quite jaded at least from what we saw in the trailer. Two lackluster scenes in particular caught our attention. One where Aamir is shown running down a tall building which brought back memories of Tom Cruise attempting a similar stunt atop Burj Khalifa in Mission Impossible -Ghost Protocol. Sadly, Aamir’s stunt falls flat on its face because of the poor VFX effects. The same can be said about Abhishek Bachchan’s helicopter stunt. The actor is shown suspended from a helicopter using rope stairs while trying to shoot someone on the ground. Even to a naked eye, it is easy to hazard a guess that the actor’s image has been copy pasted on a superficial background. The trailer is also crowded with slow motion stunt sequences which can be quite jarring after a certain point. Certain action sequences seem to have been lifted…oops inspired we mean, from Hollywood movies. The trailer also doesn’t include any specific dialogue that would have perhaps left a lasting impression before the release of the movie. Last but not the least, producer Aditya Chopra’s brother Uday makes only a fleeting appearance in the trailer. Now considering that he is the number 2 in YRF, we find his blink and miss role in the trailer, a bit puzzling. Verdict – You can never judge a book by its cover. Similarly the trailer of a movie will never reveal the true picture. We are sure the movie Dhoom 3 will have much more to offer than what we saw yesterday. But one thing’s guaranteed. If the trailer is anything to go by then it wouldn’t be too wrong to say that Dhoom 3 is an out-and-out Aamir Khan movie.
