When Shah Rukh Khan opens up about 'Faithfulness' in relationships; 'You can't force someone to...'

In the film Paheli, Khan plays a ghost who develops feelings for a lonely woman played by Rani Mukerji. The woman ultimately decides to live with the ghost instead of her husband. MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan is frequently acclaimed as the "King of Romance," and has portrayed many iconic characters throughout his remarkable 30-year career. However, Paheli is one of his more unusual films, and has suddenly gained attention again, partly because of an old interview in which Khan discusses the film's deep and encouraging message.

In the film Paheli, Khan plays a ghost who develops feelings for a lonely woman played by Rani Mukerji. The woman ultimately decides to live with the ghost instead of her husband. The film, directed by Amol Palekar, is a compelling story about a woman's right to choose her own path in life as well as a fantasy tale with roots in Indian culture.

The film's central concept is discussed by Shah Rukh Khan with tremendous enthusiasm in the old interview. According to him, Paheli is a "woman-dominated" movie that highlights the emancipation of women. Khan claims that the story's message, which is still poignant and relevant today, is about a woman's right to make her own decisions and to live her life to the fullest.

“Paheli was a folktale written about the emancipation of women. The right of women to choose what they want, the right of women to live life as beautifully and as wonderfully as everyone else does,” Khan explains.

The notion of faithfulness in the story is also discussed by the actor. Khan's solution to the question of whether Rani Mukerji's character was being unfaithful by choosing the ghost over her husband was insightful and profound. He argues that obligations or social expectations cannot produce true faithfulness; only genuine love can.

“Faithfulness has to stem from love, faithfulness can’t stem from force, and I think that is what the message of Paheli is. You can’t force someone to be faithful to you,” he states.

Many people, including actress Richa Chadha, who posted the video clip on social media, saw resonance in Khan's insights about the themes of the movie. Praising Khan's eloquence, Chadha wrote, “Is there anyone else as eloquent, intellectually exciting as this dimpled megastar? Wish for more films like Paheli so he can do more interviews like this, that give us a glimpse into his worldview. #Mohabbat.”

After appearing in Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki, Shah Rukh Khan will next be seen in Sujoy Ghosh's film King.
