While Aamir Khan's nude PK standee has not exactly made the moralists of our country lose sleep and protest vociferously, the situation would have been a tad different had a female actor posed similarly for a poster. In the past, we have seen multiple cases where actresses stripping onscreen have faced protest and even threats for shooting the so called 'vulgar' posters. Kareena Kapoor's backless posters from Kurbaan faced some stiff resistance when it was made public. Strip queen Poonam Pandey has faced the wrath of moralists on many occasions. But with superstar Aamir Khan going nude, protests all around have not exactly been in full force. The dichotomy and separate set of rules applied for men and women were quite evident given the fact that what Aamir could do with impunity, a female actor could never even dream of in our society.
When we asked about Aamir about the existing hypocrisy where different yardsticks are applied to judge male and female nudity, the actor gave us his perspective. "I think what's happening is totally the opposite. Every day we see scantily dressed women who are being objectified. They are being objectified in every medium be it in print or electronic. It is happening all around us all the time."
Explaining how his own nude standee has made men uncomfortable, Aamir said, "This is the first time in Indian cinema where an actor has posed for a poster without any clothes on him. It has made a lot of people react. A lot of men who are extremely patriarchal in their thinking are disturbed by this image."
Well, the poster has certainly served its purpose by giving the film immense publicity.
