2015: Trends in movies this year

Bollywood in 2015 has been epic. For sure. From trying out varied genres to focussing on women-lead movies, this year has brought the glam world a little closer to breaking gender inequality and making more realistic cinema. We take a look at five of the trends that stood out this year…read on:

Women ruled:

Whether it was the feisty Anushka Sharma in NH10 (which she also co-produced), the passionate Deepika Padukone of Piku or the fiery Kusum of Tanu Weds Manu Returns, women showed that they are meant to crackle the screen with their acting prowess. This is the trend that has been missing from B-Town and we are glad that these actresses decided to bring them back with a bang.

Desi locations:

Most movies this year were shot in local locations like Gurgaon, Haryana, Delhi, Jaipur and the like. Despite our obsession with firang lands, movies this year were shot with a desi backdrop to make out heroes and heroines more relatable.

A plus-size main lead:
In what can be called a definite breakthrough, a mainstream heroine was a plus-sized woman whose acting abilities and charm were appreciated. If Dum Laga Ke Haisha didn’t make you smile, you’re definitely made of stone! With more and more actresses shunning the ‘thin is in’ size, 2016 and beyond will be even more epic for the ladies.

Experimental movies:
From Maragarita With a Straw to Drishyam to Manjhi, this year saw many a unique concepts taking shape. If a disabled bisexual was discovering her sexual fantasies, an illiterate man was going head-to-head with the legal system to protect his family. It’s quite amazing to know that we, as audiences, have lapped up these movies with full gusto!

All-women buddy movie:

First time ever, Bollywood saw an all-women buddy movie that tackled topics related to everyday life. While male buddy movies are so many, this is the first time an all-female cast has created waves. With talented actresses at the helm, it would definitely move onto a glorious place in Bollywood movie list.
