'Manto' had really bad distribution: Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who was last seen onscreen in Manto, says that the distribution of Nandita Das' directorial film was really bad and because of which it was not able to do good business at the box-office.

Nawazuddin was interacting with the media at GQ Men of the Year Awards 2018 on Thursday in Mumbai.

Asked whether he is satisfied with the audience reaction to his film, he said, "I am really satisfied with the audience response to Manto. The film traveled in the world's biggest film festival so I will always be satisfied and happy with that fact.

"The film was not able to do well here as per our expectations because of the screening issue. Now after the release of Manto, I realized that screening of a film determines whether it will be a hit or a flop. Our film had really bad distribution."

Nandita Das was very much disappointed by the film's morning screening being canceled on the first day of the film's release in several cities like Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. It affected box-office business of the film to a larger extent.

Nawazuddin stars as legendary Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto in the film that was released on Friday, but multiplex chain PVR Cinemas had canceled the morning shows due to some problem.

The actor will be next seen in Thackeray, a biopic on late Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray.

It has been written by journalist and MP Sanjay Raut and directed by Abhijt Panse. It will be shot in Hindi, Marathi, and dubbed in English and is slated to release on 23 January 2019.

Alia, Deepika to be first guests on 'Koffee With Karan' season 6

Bollywood actresses Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone will be the first guests on the sixth season of filmmaker Karan Johar's chat show Koffee With Karan.

Karan announced on Twitter on Friday that the first episode will be about "girl power".

"The first cup of 'koffee' is all about girl power! Welcome Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt on episode 1, season 6 of Koffee With Karan on Star World India and Hotstar," Karan tweeted.

The grapevine was earlier abuzz that the first episode of the season will have Alia along with her Brahmastra co-actor and rumoured beau Ranbir Kapoor, who was earlier in a relationship with Deepika.

Koffee With Karan has seen a gamut of A-list stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, Salim Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji among many others in the past seasons.

Apt to describe 'Aye Zindagi' as 'Avengers' of singles: Sonu Nigam

Singer Sonu Nigam, who is a part of the unique multi-artist collaboration single "Aye Zindagi" -- which also has the voice of Asha Bhosle, Suresh Wadkar, Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Shaan -- deems it fit to be called the "Avengers" of singles.

ITW Playworx Music collaborates with Indie Music Label in association with Sony Music India for the Vishal Mishra-composed song, which was launched here on Thursday.

Sonu Nigam, Director, ITW Playworx Music, said in a statement, "I have been in the music industry for a very long time and very rarely you come across a song like 'Aye Zindagi'. All of us at ITW Playworx Music then decided to give the song its due respect like no other song in the past has ever received.

"The result is for all of you to see. Someone very aptly defined this song as the 'Avengers of singles'. Asha Bhosle, Suresh Wadkar, Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Shaan, Sonu Nigam, Vishal Mishra, Rashmi Virag and Sidhant Gupta, as part of the same song. Isn't it the most spectacular single ever?"

Alka finds the flow of the song "beautiful".

"It has a lot of depth with each singer bringing in their own flavour to it. It's a universal song and I feel it holds good for everyone," she said.

For Abhijeet, it's a sign of "healthy competition with perfect harmony". He added, "In the autotune era, we are still very lucky to be among the best."

Shaan said, "To have six voices interpreting the emotion of the same song in their unique style goes to prove that every individual looks at life differently. For me, it is a great honour to be part of such a coveted bouquet of the best ever voices of our industry."

Tiger Shroff urges fans not to do anything silly

Two die-hard fans of actor Tiger Shroff had run away from their homes to meet their hero. Tiger has expressed his concern for the boys and advised them never to repeat anything like that again.

"I can only urge them not to do anything they would regret later," he said.

The boys who had left their homes in Agra have since been sent back by the police, but when Tiger came to know of the misadventure, he said, "I'm deeply perturbed by this extravagant show of affection. Instead of feeling flattered, I am deeply troubled.

"I've seen fans do crazy things for their favourite actors. My dad (Jackie Shroff) had some real crazy fan experiences. Now when I get this kind of love I accept the warm affection humbly but I reject the drastic ways of showing them.

"So it is a very mixed feeling for me. While I am happy to receive so much love and affection, I am very disturbed that the two boys ran away from their homes just to meet me. Imagine what trauma their families or caretakers must have gone through. This is just not done."

Tiger feels there must be easier ways for fans to meet their favourite stars -- "like (Amitabh) Bachchan Saab, who religiously interacts with his fans every Sunday".

"Of course I don't even think of myself as a star. But what do I do with these beautiful people who think I am a star?," Tiger said.

If a man is not feminist, he has lost understanding of gender equality: Rhea

Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty, who will be seen in the film Jalebi, says every man and woman has a role to play in changing the image and position of women in a patriarchal society like India. She says men should understand feminism is not male-bashing, but a celebration of gender equality.

As more stories continue to keep emerging from women who are victims of gender violence, sharing her thoughts on the issue and how cinema can create an impact, Rhea said in a statement, "All of us have a role to play in changing the mindset on gender equality. For thousands of years, injustice and discrimination happened to women even for their basic rights to live as equal human beings.

"While it is good to see that dialogue has started, I must say that if a man is not a feminist, he has lost the understanding of gender equality. Feminism is not male bashing. It is a concept to celebrate gender equality, providing equal opportunity to every human being beyond gender."

Being a young actress, she has decided not to be a part of any film where women are projected in a bad light in the name of entertainment.

"There is a thin but strong line between presenting a woman in an entertaining manner and seeing her through the lens of a male chauvinist. I will certainly not take part in the latter. A film has a voice that gets heard by the maximum population as it is part of our popular culture.

"While it is important to reflect the reality, unless we are creating more aspirational female characters to admire, we won't be able to change the mindset."

Having started her career in Bollywood in 2013 with the film Mere Dad Ki Maruti, Rhea got noticed with the 2014 film Sonali Cable. However, she was not as visible as expected in mainstream big budget films.

According to her, "maintaining visibility is not a big deal".

"I could have done some item songs to maintain that, but I choose not to. In between, I also got film offers that I did not take up. Later, they went on to become hit films. But I won't regret it as that was my decision then. I am now looking forward to the film Jalebi because I know that all of us under the mentorship of Bhatt Saab (filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt) have made a film that has a soul."

Directed by Pushpdeep Bhardwaj, Jalebi is releasing on 12 October.

Kailash teams up with Prasoon for surgical strikes song

Singer-composer Kailash Kher and lyricist Prasoon Joshi have joined hands for a song on India's cross-border surgical strikes of 2016.

"I have composed and sung the song 'Mera desh meri jaan hai'. It is a surgical strikes anthem written by Prasoon Joshi. This is the Indian government celebrating the second year of surgical strikes. It is to celebrate the spirit of our soldiers," Kailash told a leading publication.

The song goes like: "Mera desh meri jaan hai, mera garv hai abhimaan hai, aur yeh abhimaan hai zinda kyunki seema par veer jawaan hai. Jal ho zameen ya aasman, kabhi jhuke nahi bharat ki shaan... Mere desh ke jawan, tujhko shat shat pranam."

Kailash will be performing the song with his band Kailasa here.

"It will happen on 30 September. We are performing at India Gate in Delhi. The song will be launched. Apart from the anthem, we will also perform on other hits by Kailasa," he said.

The anthem will also be played on radio stations and will be available online too.

On 29 September 2016, the Indian Army carried out "surgical strikes" on seven terrorist launch pads across the LoC in Pakistani Kashmir in response to an attack on its base in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is not Kailash's first anthem for the Indian government.

He had earlier worked on projects like Swachh Bharat Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Naari Shakti and Bharat ke Veer.

"After Bharat ke Veer, this will be our salutation to all Indian soldiers," said the "Allah ke bande" hitmaker.

Shahnaab Alam, who is gearing up for the release of his new project Bhoga Khidikee along with co-producer Priyanka Chopra, believes that she is one of the best people to work with.

“Priyanka has a very keen sense of storytelling where she grasps the finer nuances. It's the astute focus and creative sensitivity that make her a pleasure to collaborate with.
