The term 'Karva' means earthen pot, which symbolizes peace and prosperity, and 'Chauth' refers to 'fourth day'. It is one of the most propitious festivals for a married woman, where she prays for the safety and longevity of her husband’s life. Even girls of marriageable age pray for their desirable husbands/ fiancés.
In India, states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh observe the festival devotedly, and the ritual has caught the fancy of Gujaratis too!
Even television celebrities will dress to the nines as brides with mehendi on their hands. And Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai actress Nidhi Uttam has already set the tone for the festival, as she posted a picture on Instagram where she looked like a bridal beauty.
