Among an emerging breed of female directors altering the contours of Bollywood, Farah Khan stands tall breaking the all-male stranglehold in the film industry. This week on Zoom’s Bollywood Storytellers, the talented filmmaker talks about her troubled childhood, her initial years as choreographer and how she made a mark in the industry by presenting the glamour of Bollywood in a contemporary style. Coming from a family with films in their blood, Farah was always influenced by Bollywood movies which inspired her to make movies that capture the masala on a very large scale, be it the music, dance, romance, comedy, action or drama. Starting out as a choreographer in 1992, Farah made her mark in Hindi cinema through her distinctive fast-paced songs. On Bollywood Storytellers, Farah shares her long held ambition to be a film director, though she entered the industry incidentally as a choreographer. Her first love had always been making Bollywood movies and slowly and steadily she showcased her passion for cinema with outright big budgeted masala Hindi movies. With Main Hoon Na - the second-highest-grossing film in 2004, her first directorial debut, she brought the 70's back as a tribute to most of the Bollywood legends. Then came Om Shanti Om which displayed the charm of different eras with élan. Throughout all her movies, she has maintained the perfect original Bollywood flavors that the audiences love and sets the cash registers at the Box Office ringing. Catch this mother of triplets, who has recently debuted as a leading actress, spill the beans of surviving in a predominantly male dominated industry. Farah’s episode will air on 5 November at 8pm.
