MUMBAI: Ranveer Singh and his wife, actress Deepika Padukone, appeared on the premiere episode of Koffee With Karan Season 8, and they made a number of intriguing revelations. The Bollywood power couple's first-ever joint chat show interview took place during this one.
Ranveer disclosed to host Karan Johar that Deepika Padukone was not initially considered for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela. He mentioned, “Ram-Leela was supposed to happen with myself and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. The set was ready. One week before the roll, for some reason, Kareena had to exit the film.”
Ranveer went on to say that after witnessing Deepika's performance in the recently released Cocktail, he was the one who suggested Deepika's name to Bhansali and his group. He said, “Then we were sitting and wondering who to cast. And Cocktail had just happened (released). So there was a discussion with Mr Bhansali, all the ADs and myself in the office, about who should we take. And I was batting for team Deepika, because I just saw Cocktail, and she got cast.”
Kareena had already missed the chance to collaborate with Bhansali. Once, the actress had criticized the filmmaker for cutting her out of Devdas. Kareena was reportedly cast to play Paro, who was ultimately portrayed in the film by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. After Sanjay suddenly replaced her despite having given her a signing fee for the film, Kareena had disclosed that she "was" hurt by him.
Given what happened between them, Kareena was questioned if she would ever work with Bhansali again in a 2002 interview. She said, “I’ll never. What he did to me was wrong. He screen-tested me for Devdas, gave me a signing amount, then took someone else. That was wrong, it hurt especially because I was at the start of my career. It’s okay, because the day he dropped me, I signed Yaadein. Sanjay hurt me. Even if I have no work, I’ll never work with him.”
