Cannes Film Festival 2024: Here are the seven Indian films selected for the prestigious event From Manthan to Sister Midnight

Seven Indian films that have been selected for the screening of Cannes Film Festival 2024.

MUMBAI: It’s the time for all the filmmakers and actors across the world to travel and talk about Cannes, craft and cinema. The Cannes 2024 film festival will start from May 14 and will end on May 25. Here are the seven Indian films which are going to screen at these events.

1. All We Imagine As Light

Category:  Palme d’Or Main competition

‘All We Imagine as Light’ directed by an Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’ created a history by becoming the first Indian title in 30 years since 'Swaham' (1994)to feature in the precious competition,section of the Cannes Film Festival, where it will vie for the top prize Palme d’Or. The plot of the movie is all about an Indo-French co-production about two Kerala nurses working in a Mumbai nursing home. The film stars Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha.

2. Sister Midnight

Category: Directors Fortnight category 

‘Sister Midnight’ directed by Karan Kandhari has been selected for the Director's Fortnight category. Not much is known about the project, but its stint in the prestigious category speaks volumes of the quality of the film. 

3. Santosh 

Category: UN Certain Regard 

‘Santosh’ helmed by Sandhya Suri’s will also be presented at the 77th edition of the film gala. The movie will be screened under the Un Certain Regard category. The film is all about the lives of a family grappling with the aftermath of a tragic event. The theme of the film explores grief, memory and complexities of human relationships. 

4. In Retreat

Category: ACID

‘In Retreat’ directed by Maisam Ali finds its place in the ACID category at Cannes. The film is all about belonging and home, as a man returns to his hometown after many years and undergoes a one-night pilgrimage.

5. The Shameless

Category: UN Certain Regard 

‘The Shameless’ is directed by Bulgarian-American director Konstantin Bojanov’s film and finds its place in the Un Certain Regard section. The story is all about a young woman, essayed by Anasuya Sengupta, who escapes from a brothel in Delhi and seeks refuge in a community of sex workers.

6. Manthan 

‘Manthan’ , Shyam Benegal's 1976 masterpiece was restored and will be screened at the festival. This iconic film, which explores the theme of India’s ‘White Revolution,’ has been amazinglingly restored, allowing a new generation to experience its timeless storytelling and cultural significance.

7. Sunflowers Were the First to Know 

Category: La Cinef

‘Sunflowers were the first to know’ a short film made by a group of students from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. The film has been selected to compete in the La Cinef category at the festival in France. The film is going head-to-head with 17 other shorts for a shot at one of three La Cinef awards, set to be handed out at the Bunuel Theatre on May 23.
