MUMBAI : According to a report presented by the United Nations, divorce rates in India have increased by twofold since 2000. Ekta Tiwari, who plays the role of Flower in Dangal TV's Gudiya Rani, says divorce rates are rising in India as we are trying to adopt multiple lifestyles across the world, and we end up mixing them. Talking about the rising divorce cases, she says that people are beginning to voice the things they don’t want to accept in a relationship.
“Only one word reason behind all the ruckus is acceptance (lack of acceptance). This reason falls in place in personal and professional relations as well, not only in India but around the world,” she says, adding, “We're living in a fusion lifestyle, not purely traditional or modern. The issue arises when people selectively adopt parts of each lifestyle. Problems emerge when we try to forcefully merge these parallel lifestyles.”
She adds that in a divorce, no one side can be blamed. “You can't blame one side because sometimes things turn out this way. Also every relationship is as much your choice, as your partner’s. But if you start blaming when it goes against your wish, then that is not fair. Like till you get appreciation you love it, ones you start getting different visions you hate it,” she says.
Some people say women empowerment is a major reason for high divorce rates in India. Talking about this perception, she says, “If I say much, people will call me a feminist. However, women have always been powerful. Men started dominating in the name of protection, love, and societal norms. Now, with technology and social media, the truth is coming out, but people still blame empowerment. It's quite amusing.”
She adds, “Marriage isn’t a corporate deal full of rules and regulations. It’s a beautiful bond between two people and their families. I dislike the words "sacrifice" and "compromise" when they lead to someone losing their identity. We need to embrace the fusion era we're living in, instead of blaming cultural norms.”
