Paresh Rawal on how Nikita Roy gave him a chance to speak out against fake babas

MUMBAI: Veteran actor Paresh Rawal is known for his versatility, bold character choices, and an unwavering voice on social issues. In his latest interview with Curly Tales, where he was joined by fellow screen legend and politician Shatrughan Sinha, Paresh Rawal revealed an intensely personal reason for saying yes to the upcoming film Nikita Roy, a supernatural thriller directed by debutant filmmaker Kussh S Sinha.

While Nikita Roy explores themes of supernatural thriller, belief, and deception in a gripping narrative, for Paresh Rawal, it also became a form of emotional release. Speaking with characteristic honesty, the acclaimed actor said the film allowed him to channel his long-standing frustration with the kind of spiritual figures who prey on people’s vulnerabilities.

“I often get fascinated by communal-type of stories, especially the babas stories,” Paresh Rawal shared. “Mere andar bhadas hai baba ke prati. Mujhe woh nikalne ka mauka mila. It was a wonderful experience for me.”

In the same breath, Paresh Rawal made an important distinction, that his anger isn’t directed at faith or all spiritual leaders, but at those who misuse religion to deceive their followers. He recalled reaching out to respected spiritual teacher Morari Bapu, urging him to use his platform to spread awareness about the Swachhata Abhiyan, India’s nationwide cleanliness campaign.

“I am not talking about Morari Bapu. I just get angry at some babas who con the followers and misguide them. I feel it is an inhuman act. I hate such people,” Paresh Rawal added. “Toh yeh ek meri bhadas thi.”

This rare moment of vulnerability and rage finds expression through his role in Nikita Roy, where he portrays a character intricately woven into a story that blurs the lines between faith and fear, trust and exploitation.

While asked about working with first-time director Kush Sinha, Paresh said, “Kush Sinha's persona is very similar to Shatrughan Sinha saab. He is confident, in control, and commanding authority without shouting. As a first-time director, he did a fantastic job. He is not at all arrogant. He is a well-cultured boy. Kush also managed the first-time producers Nickky and Viicky Bhagnani. I sincerely wish he keeps on directing more and more.”

Set to release worldwide on July 18, 2025, Nikita Roy stars Sonakshi Sinha in the titular role, along with Arjun Rampal, Suhail Nayyar, and Paresh Rawal himself.

Produced under the banner of Nicky Vicky Bhagnani Films and Nikita Pai Films Ltd., with a release by Baweja Studios in association with Bliss Entertainment, Movies PTE Limited, and Karmic Films.

Written by acclaimed thriller specialist Pavan Kirpalani. The production is spearheaded by Nickky Khemchand Bhagnani, Viicky Bhagnani, Ankur Takrani, Dinesh Ratiram Gupta, Kinjal Ashok Ghone, and Kratos Entertainment, with co-producers Anand Mehta, Prakash Nand Bijlani, Shakti Bhatnagar, Mehnaaz Shaikh, Chintan Dave, and Prem Raj Joshi lending their support.
