Why John Abraham Sees Tehran as More Than Just an Action Thriller

MUMBAI: With its razor-sharp narrative and sweeping global backdrop, Tehran, now streaming on ZEE5, has emerged as one of the most talked-about films of the season. Seamlessly blending espionage, diplomacy, and the high-stakes world of international politics, the film is being praised not only for its adrenaline-pumping action but also for its intelligent storytelling and emotional depth.

Starring John Abraham, Manushi Chhillar, Neeru Bajwa, and Madhurima Tuli, and directed by Arun Gopalan, Tehran delivers a gripping, edge-of-the-seat experience that goes far beyond any conventional action thriller. It challenges viewers to consider how distant geopolitical tensions can reverberate through India’s own reality.

Bringing this realism into a real-world setting, ZEE5 hosted a special screening of Tehran in collaboration with the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) in New Delhi. The first-of-its-kind event brought together aspiring diplomats and their families for an exclusive viewing, followed by an interactive session with John Abraham himself.

During the conversation, John delved into the complexities of playing a covert operative and shared why the film's themes resonated so personally with him. “The space of geopolitics has always been of great interest to me”, John shared. “Growing up, my father made me read the newspaper cover to cover—especially the editorials by Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar in The Times of India. That early habit shaped my worldview.”
John recalled how watching Schindler’s List as a young man sparked a deeper curiosity: “I was disturbed for five days after seeing it. I couldn't understand the hatred toward the Jews, and that led me down a path of researching World War I, World War II, Hitler, the Auschwitz camps, and eventually the creation of Israel.”
That personal journey came full circle with his role in Tehran.
