MUMBAI: The passing of legendary screen icon Dharmendra on November 24 at the age of 89, just weeks shy of his 90th birthday on December 8, plunged the film fraternity and millions of fans into profound grief.

Amidst the mourning, filmmaker Anil Sharma, a close friend and director who collaborated with the veteran star on several projects, provided a moving account of Dharmendra’s last moments, revealing the hope held by the family and medical staff.

Anil Sharma, known for directing the star in films like Hukumat (1987), Elaan-E-Jung, Farishtay, and Tahalka, as well as bringing the three Deols—Dharmendra, Sunny, and Bobby—together in the family drama Apne (2007), recounted his final visit to the star's residence.

Dharmendra had been admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital earlier in November after experiencing breathlessness.

After receiving treatment, he was discharged on November 12 and continued his recovery at home.

Anil recalled that when he visited the veteran at his Bandra bungalow, the actor appeared to be on the mend, raising everyone's spirits.

Speaking about that hopeful time, Anil stated, "I went to his home. He had recovered. He would open his eyes and even move his hands."

He emphasised the strength and resilience Dharmendra showed, adding that the medical team was also confident in his recovery.

"Doctors assured us he would recover, and even in the hospital, it looked like he would," Sharma continued. "Doctors were saying that Dharamji is a very strong man."

The unexpected deterioration of his health shortly after his discharge came as a shock to everyone. "But age shows its signs, and you can't fight that.

Everyone was hopeful, and we all thought we would celebrate his birthday on December 8," Sharma concluded. Despite the sudden turn, Dharmendra spent his final moments surrounded by his family.

His demise marks the end of an era for Indian screen history, where he maintained a career spanning over six decades as an enduring star.

He is survived by his wives, Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his children, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol.
