MUMBAI: Actress Saniya Khera, known for her performances in Junooniyatt, Tose Naina Milaike, Mann Atisundar and Prem Leela, is all set to appear as the negative lead in the upcoming show Shehzadi Hai Tu Dil Ki. Opening up about why she took up the role of Kanika, Saniya exclusively told TellyChakkar that she was drawn to the depth, reasoning and psychological layers the character offers.

Saniya, who has portrayed several complex characters, believes that every role must be approached with empathy rather than labels. “The first thing I did was understand her psychology. I didn’t want to play her as just ‘the villain.’ I wanted to know why she behaves the way she does — her fears, her motives, her emotional triggers,” she shares. To bring authenticity to Kanika, she created an entire backstory, shaping the character’s childhood, insecurities and ambitions so that every expression comes from a genuine emotional place.

For Saniya, playing intense characters has always been creatively fulfilling but challenging. “The challenge was to make her believable without turning her into a typical villain,” she explains. “Balancing her intensity with emotional subtleties so the audience understands her instead of judging her — that was the real test.” She also admits that performing back-to-back negative roles can be emotionally heavy, and the discipline lies in ensuring that no two characters ever feel the same.

An actor who adapts effortlessly across genres, Saniya studies the rhythm and tone of each one. “Every genre has its own pace. For a negative role, I use controlled movements and a stronger presence, while in light-hearted roles I keep my body language relaxed and natural,” she says.

She credits legendary actress Sridevi as her greatest inspiration and dream influence. “Her versatility, grace and emotional depth were unmatched. I aspire to bring that same authenticity and dedication to every role I take on,” Saniya adds.

Saniya Khera’s commitment to nuanced storytelling and emotionally grounded performances sets the tone for her newest journey. As she steps into Kanika’s world in Shehzadi Hai Tu Dil Ki, viewers can expect a layered, powerful portrayal shaped by empathy, preparation and her signature depth as an actor.
