MUMBAI: If the concept of ‘ageing like fine wine’ were to be personified, it would undoubtedly embody the visage of Ramya Krishnan. From the moment she embarked on her journey in 1984 with Vellai Manasu, Ramya’s trajectory has been nothing but forward, as she continuously embraced roles spanning multiple languages, solidifying her status as an unparalleled star in the realm of South Indian cinema.

Her image ascended to such peaks that she was entrusted with the role of the antagonist in superstar Rajinikanth’s all-time blockbuster Padayappa. Notably, her character in it possessed an equally towering and commanding presence as the protagonist.

Now, Ramya has once again captured the hearts of cinema audiences and her fans by appearing in Nelson Dilipkumar’s recent action thriller, Jailer, wherein she shares the screen with Rajinikanth again.

Nonetheless, the actor, hailing from Tamil origins, recently revealed the factors behind her shift towards undertaking more Telugu films during her initial days, as opposed to those in the Tamil industry.

Pointing out that even the Tamil films that emerged as hits didn’t give her any mileage, Ramya said during a conversation with Galatta Plus, “I was not a good performer then. After watching Muthal Vasantham (1986), my mother asked me how I had survived this long. I wasn’t there to receive the appreciation for the role. Sathyaraj sir and Malaysia Vasudevan sir were the stars of that film. It didn’t help me.”

She also recalled that a lot of her early projects, despite being highly anticipated, bombed at the box office, which also contributed to her choice to switch to the Telugu film industry and accept whatever opportunities came her path.

Though KP Kumaran’s Malayalam film Neram Pularumbol was the first-ever movie in which Ramya worked, the film was released only in 1986, and by then, she had already done a couple of films in Tamil and Telugu.
