MUMBAI: Ponniyin Selvan 1, Mani Ratnam’s masterpiece period drama, is aiming to break records at the box office as it has crossed the Rs. 400 crores gross mark, worldwide. As per sources, it could cross the Rs. 500 mark soon. It has been released in cinemas worldwide and is available in 5 languages: Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

The film tells the story of the early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who would later become the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014). The film is led by actor Jayam Ravi in the role of Arulmozhivarman, along with Vikram, Karthi, Trisha and Aishwarya Rai in other key roles.

Entertainment industry tracker, Ramesh Bala took to Twitter on Tuesday to report that PS 1 has grossed Rs. 400 crores. The film is now the highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time in the US, surpassing Rajinikanth’s 2.0.

Trustworthy sources predict that PS 1 will continue to rise to the top up till Diwali by earning another Rs. 120 crores over the next few weeks. In Tamil Nadu, PS 1 crossed the Rs. 150 crores gross over the weekend. The film is now the second highest-grossing film in the state, just behind Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, which grossed around Rs. 190 crores.

This film is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s return to Tamil cinema after a decade. She plays the role of Queen Nandini in the film, and there is also a glimpse of her playing a dual character: her mute mother Mandakini Devi. Both audiences and critics were highly impressed with Aishwarya’s performance when the film was released.

In a recent interaction, Mani Ratnam revealed that the sequel to the franchise will release in another six to nine months and that the team is actively working on the post-production.
