Palki Malhotra had the vision to bring to life India’s first-ever dance based fiction show with Dill Dostii Dance on Channel [V]. The show has bagged immense fan following over the years. After holding the show close to her chest for more than two years now, Palki makes way for a new creative team to take over who will hold the responsibility to take the show to greater heights.
Tellychakkar.com had been trying to get to talk to the lady herself ever since we published an article on the ‘big bad controversy’ that might have been the reasons for Palki’s exit from the show. And over the weekend, Palki finally obliged to talk to us at length on what went wrong. And the revelations are quite intriguing as some of her confessions can shock many avid fans of D3. Read on...
Dill Dostii Dance is literally your baby. How does it feel to move out?
Yes, I have actually conceived and delivered it. It is a sad feeling obviously, because I have been so much into the show for all these years. But as I said before, I respect the decisions of asking me to move out...the authorities have a bigger responsibility to nurture and shape up the show in the way they want. So be it...
What about reports of the entire cast on the set being livid with you for the fact that you have been biased towards the character of Swayam?
I knew you would be asking me this. To tell you honestly, these issues have been there for a while now. A few actors held me responsible for being biased towards Shantanu aka Swayam. The debate has never vanished nor diminished. I am now tired of proving myself. It is so funny and hilarious as I feel only an insecure lot can accuse me of being biased. Yes, the guy is close to me even beyond the sets, and as a matter of fact these stupid talks had got us talking to each other in the first place.
Go on, Palki...
See, I have left no room for anything when it comes to the story line. And if I was being biased towards only one character, then D3 would not have achieved whatever it has achieved over the years. All the cast members of D3 would have not been popular. It seldom happens in a daily soap that all the characters are popular. But with D3 we achieved this only because we did 100% justice even to a cameo character. The show is now two and a half year old baby, and has its huge fan base. And everyone knows that Shantanu is not the main hero, and Kunwar is the one. But I cannot deny the fact that my cast has had an issue about it in past and also in present. But let me tell you this – I always receive fan mails where people ask me why the story lines and tracks are so biased towards Rey, that is Kunwar Amarjeet Singh. So tell me, how do I address this? The viewers have never felt that I have ever been biased towards the other guy in the show. All that I know is that I have always been true to my conscience. I have given so much towards this show, that I cannot put it in words. Also it is wrong on the part of people to point at Shantanu for everything. One simply cannot say that he has used his charm to get things done on the set. I will never accept this.
Getting a bit personal, what is the kind of rapport or closeness that you and Shantanu share?
See, I am extremely fond of the guy because he is very genuine at heart. If he talks to you, trust me he will never have any vested interests, like several others do. This is the main reason why my entire crew is close to him too.mAnd why are you only talking about my closeness with Shantanu? There are several others on the set with whom I share an equally good rapport. The best part about our conversations is that we will never speak about D3. We gel along well for another reason, that is because he is very interested in film making and has the hunger to learn. Initially, when the show started, there was only a ‘Hi’ and a ‘Bye’ that I and Shantanu shared. But these bullsh** talks about our closeness has been there even then...only because he managed to get noticed on screen...To tell you more, these talks in fact drove us to know each other more and get close.
As I have told you in an earlier interview that I gave for Tellychakkar.com, I do not have any best friends from the industry. Shantanu is a good person to be with. But as I asked you earlier, why are you only bothered about my closeness with him? I am also close with my SP, my ACD...and share a similar rapport with the cameraman too. I share an even better rapport with Ameeta (Devadiga). So why talk only about Shantanu? This is because Ameeta is a girl and the other guys are all off the screen, isn’t it?
Well, we have also reported about the probability of Kunwar Amarjeet Singh and Shakti Mohan being responsible for getting you out of the team?
Well, this could be a possibility. Both Kunwar and Shakti used to take it in the offensive about me being biased towards Swayam, as they mostly thought the show was only about them. They constantly worried how the story of Sharon and Swayam was gaining so much popularity. So I guess this could be possible, though I do not know what exactly started this controversy.
So what’s next for you?
Well, Cinevistaas actually hired me as the overall Fiction Head. But when D3 happened, nobody could really understand the concept of a daily dance fiction show and what exactly was to be shown. So I gave my 24*7 to the show. I am very thankful to Mr. Mehta and Siddhu (Siddharth P Malhotra) for giving me the complete independence. They never ever questioned me during this phase, and I now need to give myself back to them. I am going back to what I was actually hired for. And of course, we will chalk out our next plans.
