Urvashi Dholakia
Urvashi Dholakia is back to fiction with Zee’s Geeta. She plays Malini Yadav and will turn out in a completely new avatar. The show is about the protagonist, Geeta (Sargunn Mehta). Most importantly, it dwells upon Section 498A, which deals with dowry cases. TellyChakkar caught with Urvashi to know more about her character and her look in the show… You are back onscreen with a black character… This is a black character but is not remotely close to my earlier characters. Her characteristics, background is different. She is absolutely dehati. Were you ok with the idea of playing a mother to grown up children? I was ok from the actor’s perspective but I was not ok with the fact that I may not look it. My body frame might not come across like that. But then again we are in the entertainment world so creative liberty is allowed. Playing a mother to four or one isn’t a big deal, as the end of the day you are playing a mother. Describe your character… She basically hails from Patna and looks like she is from Delhi. She is a wannabe who wants to achieve everything in life but does not end up a loser; she manages to get something or the other. How did you bag the role? I just got a call from the producers one day telling me that this is one character I haven’t done before and should consider it. I was unsure initially because I wasn’t used to the accent, the Bihari tone because living in Mumbai you are used to speaking shuddh Hindi and English but then I decided to go for it. How would you differentiate this character from the other roles you have done so far? You have seen Urvashi playing ‘class’ now you will see her playing ‘crass’. You have to see the clothes I am wearing, the way the look was designed. So what do you like about the role? I liked the way they convinced me into doing this role and how powerful it is. It is a different role and there is nothing to like or dislike about it. It is the conviction. When they told me the role had been written for me, I was convinced. It boosted my morale. She is a bitter-sweet person and I like that about her. Tell us a bit about your look in the show… (Laughs) She is a typical Delhi housewife. She thinks she is la di dah but she isn’t. She has a different style. She tries hard. No high end make up for me. Blouses with sleeves and normal saris for me. I am actually looking forward to it. Does your character have a comical touch to it? Yes it does. She does try talking a lot in English and ends up speaking it wrong because she is a wannabe. Her daughters go to a good college and are beautiful, so she wants to be like them. Like I said she is a bitter-sweet person and her sweetness comes out in a comical way but otherwise she is very shrewd. She will do anything to get her way. She will get her work done through you and you won’t even come to know! What is the USP of the show? The USP is it revolves around section 498A. It revolves around the law many women are not aware about. The story shows the pluses and the minuses of the law. Most social dramas start well but often lose track as the story progresses. How do you think Geeta is different? I never said Geeta is different. I just said Geeta is a story that deals with the section 498A. She might be getting harrowed by in laws but she is not aware of the law. For me TV is not just about preaching, it is also about entertainment. I cannot talk like others saying it’s educative. It’s an entertainment based show through which we will inform you somewhat about the use and the misuse of the law. Zee has introduced this new timeslot of 6-7pm. Do you think Geeta will be able to catch viewer’s attention at 6.30? Well, Zee was the first to introduce the 7.30 time slot with Sindoor. These were successful shows I remember. TV has always been about trial and error. So we should try and make the most of our abilities.
