AUDIENCE PERSPECTIVE! Why sequels of hit and classic television shows are failing to create the same magic on-screen?

MUMBAI: Television is one such medium that has a huge reach to viewers across the country.

A lot of amazing content is produced on television and it’s been ages since the viewers have enjoyed watching it.

Television has always been an integral part of each household, especially in our country.

The saas-bahu sagas continue to rule the small screens even in today's times.

However, apart from that, there has been a lot of evolution on time in terms of its content.

The viewers have seen how TV shows with new concepts are being made and even actors are willing to experiment with them.

Television has got more realistic with time and the new concept shows are developing a separate set of audiences.

However, the current trend in television has become quite bizarre.

The makers are coming up with sequels of popular and iconic shows these days.

Ekta Kapoor came back with a bang with her hit show Kasauti Zindagi Kay's season 2 in the year 2018 with a fresh new star cast.

Though the show ran for two years, it failed to create the same magic as the first season which had an amazing run for 7 years on the small screens.

Not just this, shows like Naagin series, Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? Ek Baar Phir, Qubool Hai 2.0, Jamai 2., Sasural Simar Ka 2, Sasuraal Genda Phool 2, Saath Nibhana Saathiya 2, Sarabhai VS Sarabhai Take 2, Khichdi 2, Balika Vadhu 2, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain 2, Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi 3, Pratigya 2 are some shows that came back once again on the small screens with the second and third season.

However, most of them proved to be a big flop.

Though the makers tried their best to create the same magic by roping in a similar star cast, the viewers were not pleased to see their favourite shows being remade.

It’s high time the makers understood that these iconic shows were made in a different set of times and bringing them back in the current times is quite risky.

The viewers' taste keeps changing and the content that worked a decade ago does not necessarily work in the current times.

The makers have tied their best to maintain the essence of the previous season and yet bring newness to these shows but unfortunately, it didn't work out in their favour.

A lot of sequels received a very lukewarm response from the viewers and the shows were wrapped just within a few months of their release.

Even introducing new actors and taking leaps did not work in their favour.

In fact, the sequels are just having a new and ensemble cast and the makers are only focusing on glamour, huge grandeur whereas the story quality is being compromised.

Well, it is rightly said that masterpieces should never be touched as they lose their essence when they are remade.

It will be interesting to see if the makers learn from the debacle of the sequels of the shows that were being made or they still choose to go ahead and remake more iconic shows.
