MUMBAI: Ulka Gupta is one of the young faces of Indian television and the audience love her dearly. She is  popularly known as Manu, the young Rani Lakshmibai, in the Zee TV soap Jhansi Ki Rani until the leap; later she made a re-entry in the same show as Kaali. Her debut film was the Tollywood movie Andhra Pori, in which she plays the lead character, Prashanti. Gupta also appeared in the 2015 Telugu film Rudhramadevi.

What are your thoughts about the current track of the show and what can the audience expect from the upcoming one?

“I am glad as long as it’s doing justice to the drama. Banni Chow Home Delivery is about Banni and life is unpredictable, just like those things are happening and unfolding in her life. The upcoming track is going to be full of drama. I don’t know much of the sequences. I also enjoy not knowing everything; I don’t like to know the whole conclusion already. As actors, we get to perform the scenes as and when they come every day. We also enjoy the thrill of not knowing.”

This is a different type of character. How did you prepare for the role?

“As an actor, I have done many different types of characters who are from different regions. I have played a Marathi girl, Gujarati girl, South Indian, Rajasthani, UP, Bihar and I wanted to do Rajasthani again and with a thicker accent this time. I tried to get into it with the help of a diction coach from the production coach and they understand it very well because the makers are from Rajasthan themselves. I dived really deep into it and they said that it’s a Hindi TV show and people won’t understand if we used complete Rajasthani language. I love doing these things. Cooking was also a prerequisite. I have always loved to cook. So I understand the knack for cooking that Banni has. Everything that Banni has asked me to do as a requirement, has come from my heart.”

The TRPs of the show have declined recently. What according to you could be the reason for that?

“I hardly have any opinion on that. I feel as actors we are only supposed to bring alive whatever is written on the script. We don’t generate ideas for our characters or the story. I am supposed to play Banni and whatever comes as a destiny for her in the script, is what I try to put life in. I love the story and how it started. The time slot could be a reason for the TRPs declining. The time slot is compelling the makers to add the kind of drama which we are currently portraying. There is no formula for a sure shot success.”
